Educational Equity
• Educational equity is a federally mandated
right of all students to have equal access
to classes, facilities, and educational
programs no matter what their national
origin, race, gender, sexual orientation,
disabilities, first language, or other
distinguishing characteristic
• In upholding educational equity, school
districts are required to provide certain
programs for students to ensure equal
education.
• For example, students with disabilities
have access to specialized education
programs.
Diversity
• A range of different things.
• It means understanding that each
individual is unique, and
recognizing our individual
differences.
Types of diversity

1. Socioeconomic diversity
2. Physical diversity
3. Ability diversity
Categories of exceptionality:

• Intellectual
• Communicative
• Sensory
• Physical
• Multiple
Language diversity:

• Strategies to integrate address language


diversity:

• Avoid forcing pupils to speak up immediately.


• Give them some print material.
• Try to talk individually to the students.
• If possible, use satisfactory or
unsatisfactory grading.
• Start lesson with simple questions having
‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer.
Encouraging equity in classrooms:

• Observe carefully
• Involve others
• Promote autonomy
• Organize support groups
• Celebrate learning
