WHAT IS A CONDITIONAL SENTENCE?


 Conditional Sentences are also known as
Conditional Clauses or If Clauses.  
 They are used to express that the action in the

main clause (without if) can only take place if


a certain condition (in the clause with if) is
fulfilled.

Conditional Sentences

Structure :
A conditional sentence is composed of 2 parts :

If-clause + Main Clause


Example :

If it rains tomorrow, we will not come.

If-clause Main Clause


Conditional Sentences
Types :
 The order of the two clauses is flexible, it’s not
important.
But if the if-clause comes first, it must be followed by
a comma.
If it rains, I’ll stay at home

 There are 5 types of conditional sentences.


They are classified according to the degree of
probability that they express.
 Each type of conditional sentences uses different
tenses to show the difference in the degree
of probability.
TYPE 0

 Type 0: if/when+ present simple present simple


*Use: to talk about general truths or things that always happen
Ex: Water boils if it reaches 100º
+ We can also use when instead of if.

Example: Present Tense Present Tense

If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.

If you pour oil into water, it floats.

TYPE 1
 Type 1: If + present simple will + bare infinitive
* Use:
1. to talk about things that are likely to happen in the future
* Note: unless (= if not)
Ex: Unless we protect the rainforests, thousands of animals will die.
Ex: If I study, I’ll pass
2. To make promises or warnings
Ex: If you forget my birthday, I’ll never speak to you again.
3. To give commands
Ex: If you are tired, go to bed!
Ex: In this case the verb in the main clause is an Imperative

HOMEWORK ( CONDITIONALS
TYPE 0+1)
Replace "If...not" with "Unless"

1. Put  “Unless” in place of  'if '. 


2. Remove 'do not , does not, not' . 
3. Add s/es to the verb if you remove "does
not" . 
4. Write remaining sentence. 
5. Using 'unless' in place of 'If' (in case 'not'
is missing ) means you have to make other 
part negative if is Affirmative and vice
versa . 
EXAMPLE:
1. If the cart is not ready, we will go on foot.
 Unless the cart is ready, we will go on foot.

Use UNLESS instead of IF

Use UNLESS instead of IF
e. We will miss the train if we do not start now.
 We will miss the train unless we start now.

f. If Helen does not submit the assignment

 Unless Helen submits the assignment today, she

g. If you do not water the plants, they will not
grow.
 Unless you water the plants, they will not grow.
