PHASE CONTROL RECTIFIER

1 PHASE HALF WAVE CONTROLLED

RECTIFIER WITH RL LOAD AND FWD

MADE BY:SHADAN ALAM SHADAB(16/IEE/050)

PHASE CONTROL RECTIFIER
• Phase controlled rectifier is a one type of rectifier circuit
in which the diodes are switched by
Thyristors or SCRs (Silicon Controlled Rectifiers).
Whereas the diodes offer no control over the o/p voltage,
the Thyristors can be used to differ the output voltage by
adjusting the firing angle or delay. A phase control
Thyristor is activated by applying a short pulse to its gate
terminal and it is deactivated due to line communication
or natural. In case of heavy inductive load, it is
deactivated by firing another Thyristor of the rectifier
during the negative half cycle of i/p voltage.
Types of Phase Controlled Rectifier
Single-phase Controlled Rectifier

• This type of rectifier which works from

single phase AC input power supply.

Single Phase Controlled Rectifiers are

classified into different types:-
1.Half wave Controlled Rectifier
2.Full wave Controlled Rectifier
etc…
Three-phase Controlled Rectifier

• This type of rectifier which works from

three phase AC input power supply.

• A semi converter is a one quadrant converter that has

one polarity of o/p voltage and current.
• A full converter is a a two quadrants converter that has
polarity of o/p voltage can be either +ve or –ve but, the
current can have only one polarity that is either +ve or
-ve.
• Dual converter works in four quadrants – both o/p
voltage and o/p current can have both the polarities.

1 PHASE HALF WAVE CONTROLLED RECTIFIER:

Single phase half-wave controlled rectifiers are

extensively used in number of power
electronic based converters. In its simplest
form, phase control can be described by
considering the half-wave thyristor circuit. In
half wave Single phase controlled rectifier only
one SCR is employed in the circuit. It included
in between the AC source and the load. The
performance of the controlled rectifier very
much depends upon the type and parameters of
the output (load) circuit.
The single phase half wave controlled rectifier
consists of following:

1. AC supply
2. Thyristor
3. Load
Depending upon the load requirements
Single phase rectifiers are divided into:

 1. R Load
2. RL Load
3. RL Load with Freewheeling Diode

RECTIFIER WITH RL LOAD AND FWD
• In this have wave rectifier, freewheeling diode is connected in
parallel with the load. This diode is described as a commutating
diode, flywheel diode or by-pass diode .This diode is commonly
described as a commutating diode as its function is to commutate or
transfer load current away from the rectifier whenever the load-
voltage goes into a reverse-state. This diode serves two main
functions:

i) It prevents reversal of load voltage except for small diode voltage-

drop.

ii) It transfers the load current away from the main rectifier, thereby
allowing all of its thyristors to regain their blocking state.
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM:
OPERATION:
1. With diode FWD thyristor will not be able to conduct beyond 180 deg.

2.  Induced voltage in inductance will change its polarity as di/dt changes its sign and
diode FWD will start conducting as soon as the induced voltag is of sufficient
magnitude, therby enabling the inductance to discharge its stored energy into the
resistance.

3 .Here after 180 the load current will freewheel through the diode and a reverse-voltage
will appear across the thyristor.

4. The power flow from the input takes place only when the thyristor is conducting.

5. If there is no freewheeling diode, during the -ve portion of supply voltage, thyristor
returns the energy stored in the load inductance to the supply line.

6.  With diode FWD the freewheeling action takes place and no power will be returned to
the source.

 7. Hence the freewheeling diode improves the input power factor.
