ASSESMENT IN A CONSTRUCTIVIST,

TECHNOLOGY SUPPORTED LEARNING

WHAT IS ASSESSMENT?

From the word to assess, which means to

support or guide learner‘s understanding in
order for it to enhance.
Constructivists suggest that learning is more
effective when a student is actively engaged in
the learning process rather
than attempting to receive knowledge
passively.
Constructivist view assessment as a process
that involves both teacher and learner.
Why assessment is important?
Assessment is an integral part of instruction.
Assessment affects decisions about grades, placement,
advancement, and instructional needs.
Assessment inspire us to ask these hard questions:
a. Are we teaching what we think we are teaching?
b. Are the students learning what they are supposed to
be learning?
c. Is there a way to teach the subject better, thereby
promoting better learning?
WHAT IS CONSTRUCTIVIST
THEORY?

It is a theory that explains how knowledge

is constructed in the human being when
information comes into contact with
existing knowledge that has been
developed by experiences.
PRINCIPLES OF
ASSESSMENT IN A
CONSTRUCTIVIST
CLASSROOM
1. Not to isolate evaluation as a
single exercise

Constructivists often see learning as

cyclical process , since the shape of a circle
has no beginning and no end, then the
mark of where to assess is blurry .

2. NOT HAVING THE TEACHER
AS THE ONLY SOURCE OF
ASSESSMENT
-Many constructivist encourage self-
reflection as a means of assessment, or
encourage learners to exchange evaluations of
each other’s works.
WHAT IS TECHNOLOGY-
SUPPORTED LEARNING?
-It is used to encourage students
especially in facilitating student centered
learning activities.
-It is more than technology enhance
instruction.
-It recognizes that learning is supported in
many ways, even if there is no formal teaching
involved.
 SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES
BETWEEN CONTRUCTIVIST AND
TRADITIONAL ASSESSMENT
 SIMILARITIES

1. both constructivist and traditional

assessment can take on formats:
paper and pencil; physical hands on
experiences; or type of exchange.
2. The phrasing and the use of
critical thinking terminology in
questioning can also be similar.
3. Teachers in traditional classroom
also use assessment in order to plan
lesson and develop activities.
DIFFERENCES
DIFFERENCES

1. Constructivist assessor has greater priorities in the concept of judging the active construction of thinking as well as the outcome than
traditional assessors
2. Traditional learning environment
support standardized testing and
make many decisions off of those
scores while constructivists prefer that
assessment have more of a ‘real life’
application which would be authentic,
performance, or portfolio assessment.
REFLECTION
It is said that traditional paper and pencil are not
adequate to assess learning in a constructivist
technology supported learning. In assessing
student learning we only not depend on the skills
they have but also for the output which is the
assessment. With the help of the scoring rubrics
which contain the criteria and the level of the
performance we can smoothly assess their
performance.
