Pissarro and Cezanne

Same scene, very similar styles, “impressionistic”

Impressionism: like a snapshot,

realistic scenes, softer edges,
many small thin unblended brushstrokes,
included depiction of light and movement.
often paintings were of the outdoors.

Same scene, but see how Cezanne

was branching off into more
geometric forms and bolder colors

Post-impressionism: focused more on

shapes and architectural elements,
more vivid colors, thick paint and
distinct brushstrokes, analyzed the
subject from different directions
See how his style changed.
The movement away from impressionism
paved the way for the development of modern art

Picasso, “Cubism”, early 1900s

Cezanne

Modern art, based largely on the emotions and

concepts of the individual artist.
A note about COLOR:

Cézanne understood
that when
complementary colors
like
RED and GREEN

(found on opposite
sides of the color
wheel) 

are placed adjacently in

a painting, they
became more intense.

Postimpressionist paintings were often done

in a studio to allow for a slower, methodical,
analytical process
