DESCRIPTION

This braking system is a fully hydraulic, dual circuit design, providing

quick response and virtually unlimited volume capacity.
Dual circuit: The front dry disc brake circuit and rear wet disc brake circuit
make up the dual circuit design.
Front dry disc brakes: there are 3 brake calipers per wheel
(six pistons per caliper).
Rear wet disc brakes: forced oil cooled multiple disc design,
hydraulically actuated - spring returned.
Steer/brake apply tank: front portion of the hydraulic tank
supplies oil to the steer pump and the steer
pump supplies oil to the brake apply
system (tank net capacity of approximately
231 litres (61 gallons)).

STEERING TANK

The steer tank supplies oil to the steering pump. Filtered steering
supply oil pressure is then directed from the pump into the brake apply
system via the RCB valve.

The steer pump supplies filtered oil to the RCB valve mounted under
the steer accumulators. Supply oil for the brake apply system is
taken from the RCB valve and sent to the service brake valve.

SERVICE BRAKE VALVE

Supply pressure (port P)

to front accumulator to rear accumulator

The supply oil from the RCB valve enters the service brake valve at
the front underside of the valve (port P). The supply oil is then
directed through individual one way check valves and out to the two
brake accumulators.

The service brake valve is connected directly to the brake accumulators.

The brake accumulators are mounted in the hydraulic cabinet to the
right of the cab.

ACCUMULATOR OPERATION
Oil pressure supplied to the brake accumulators by the steer pump, via the
RCB valve and the service brake valve, enters the brake accumulators at
Ports A of both accumulators. This pressure acts upon a free-floating
piston inside the accumulator to force it against the dry nitrogen precharge
gas.
This creates a build-up of pressure, to the Nitrogen
Gas
maximum pressure setting of the steering N
1200 PSI
pump; therefore the proper pressure attained
in the brake accumulators should be - 20700
± 345 kPa (3000 ± 50 psi).

Steering System Oil

If at any time supply oil is lost between the
RCB valve and the service brake valve, one
way check valves inside the service brake
valve will close to prevent the loss of the
braking pressure stored in the accumulators.
This oil is then available for supplementary
braking - if required.

Supplementary Braking
The two brake accumulators
store hydraulic oil in sufficient
volume, under pressure, one for
the front brake circuit and one
for the rear. This will provide
supplementary braking in case of
steer pump failure, engine
shutdown, or because of leakage
in the brake system supply.
The system is designed to
supply at least 5 full brake
applications to at least one axle.

Piston stop adjustment:

1. Remove the o’ring plug.

2. Apply the brakes using the

load/dump brake switch.

3. Install special tool onto the retainer

nut and loosen.

4. Using an allen wrench, turn the set

screw in (clockwise) until the it
contacts the piston, then back the set
screw off 1.5 turns (ccw).

5. While holding the allen wrench,

prevent the set screw from turning
while tightening the retainer nut.

6. Repeat steps until all three piston

stops are adjusted properly.

NOTE: both sides should be adjusted

at the same time for consistent apply
times from wheel to wheel.

Remove the o’ring plug to access a piston stop adjustment screw.

Brake wear check procedure:

1. Remove the o’ring plug.

2. Install brake wear indicator tool - be

sure the brakes are totally bleddown.

3. Apply brakes using the load/dump

brake.

4. Using a 0 - 1” depth micrometre, push

the brake wear indicator pin in against the
apply piston of the brake.

5. While holding the pin against the apply

piston, measure the distance between the
head end of the pin and the outer surface
of the wear tool. Record the dimension.

NOTE: if the dimension measured is

0.280” larger than the number dimension
stamped into the brake housing (example
0.689”), the wet disc brake assembly must
be rebuilt.

6. Release the load/dump brake,

bleeddown the brake accumulators,
Brake wear indicator tool port remove the brake wear indicator tool and
install the o’ring plug.

Parking Brake Switch

This picture shows the parking brake switch in the “ON” position (down). Placing this
switch in the ON position will cause the parking brake light in the light display bank to
either flash or light up solid.
If the engine is running, the hauler is stopped or traveling < 0.8 km/h (0.5 mph), the
parking brake is placed in the ON position, the parking brake will be applied and the
light will be ON solid.
If the engine is running, the hauler travel speed is > 0.8 km/h (0.5 mph), and the
parking brake switch is placed in the ON position, the parking brake light will flash
indicating the parking brake is not applied.
