Natural Approach
• Theory of language: The essence of language is meaning. Vocabulary is the most
important of language.
• Theory of learning: There are two ways of language development. Acquisition, a
natural subconscious process, and learning, a conscious process.
• Objectives: Designed to give beginners and intermediate learners basic
communicative skills.
• Syllabus: Based on selection of communicative activities and topics that learner
needs.
• Activity types: Activities with a
comprehensible input. Think
about things in the here-and-now.
Focus on meaning, not form.
• Learner roles: Shouldn’t try to
learn language in the usual sense.
• Teacher roles: The teacher is the
primary source. He must create a
positive climate and choose a rich
mixture of classroom activities.
• Roles of materials: Come from
reality rather than text-books.
Must promote comprehension and
communication.
• Theory of language: The
memorization of meaningful
text is recommended.
• Theory of learning: Learning
occurs through suggestion.

• Learner roles: Must maintain a passive
state and allow the materials to work on
them.
• Teacher roles: Must create situations
in which learner has a positive
reception and retention. Must have
authority and confidence.
• Roles of materials: Consists of texts,
tapes classroom fixtures, and music.
