DEFINITIONS

Charge nurses are responsible for overseeing a


specific department within a healthcare facility
for their assigned shift. Individuals in this role
perform such duties as delegating nursing
assignments, preparing schedules, overseeing
admissions and discharges, and monitoring and
ordering medicines and supplies.
Ward sister
Ward sisters need to work alongside staff as
a role model and mentor, developing clinical
competencies and leadership skills within the
team. An important part of their job is to monitor
performance and ensure training needs are met
and that staff receive a “robust” annual appraisal
 Staff nurse
 A Staff Nurse is a registered nurse who
provides high-quality care to employees of a
company, residents of nursing homes, or patients
in a hospital. They are responsible for initial
patient assessment, monitoring patients' vital
signs, and nurturing patients to recovery.
 Healthcare assistant duties and responsibilities
 Serving meals and helping to feed patients.
 Helping people to move around.
 Toileting.
 Making beds.
 Talking to patients and making them comfortable.
 Monitoring patients' conditions by taking
temperatures, pulse, respirations and weight.
 What is a Student Nurse? ... As a student nurse,
you will work to promote, maintain and restore
the health of patients by following the clearly laid
out hospital procedures. Because the scope
of student nursing practice is limited, you will
often need approval before you can administer
any care to patients.
