 Introduction

– What is Pollution?
– Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into
the natural environment that cause adverse
change. 
– Pollution can be of the form(Different Types of
Pollution:
1. Air Pollution 5.Thermal Pollution
2. Water Pollution 6.Radiation Pollution
3. Soil Pollution
4. Noise Pollution
Air Pollution

– Air pollution is the introduction of particulates, molecules,

or other harmful materials into Earth's atmosphere, which
causes diseases, death to humans, damage to other living
organisms such as animals and food crops.
– Air pollution may come from anthropogenic sources or
natural sources.
– Types of Air pollutant:
– Primary: These affect the environment in same form as
they are released. For eg:Dust,Fog,Oxides of C,N,S etc.
– Secondary: When two primary impurities combine to form
third impurity. For eg: Smog,CFCs etc.
Water Pollution

– Water pollution refers to the addition of any unfavourable

substance due to which it’s physical and chemical
properties changes.
– Water pollution may also come
from anthropogenic sources(Man-made) or natural
sources.
– Natural Sources:Soil Erosion due to heavy rain,floods,dead
and decaying remains of plants & animals.
– Anthropogenic Sources:Sewage disposal, Industrial
Effluents, Humans activities like(bathing, washing
clothes),Traditons like(immersion of idols) etc.
Soil Pollution

– Any change in the physical , chemical and biological

properties of the soil due to natural or human activities is
known as soil pollution.
– Major types of Soil Pollutants are: Heavy Metals
(Pd,Cd),Dioxins (produced as by-product in production of
pesticides).
– Soil pollution may also come from  Man-made sources or
natural sources.
– Natural Sources:Landslides,Floods,Drought,Forest
Fires,Earthquakes etc.
– Man-Made Sources:Urbanisation,Mining,Radioactive waste
etc.
Noise Pollution

– Noise pollution refers to loud sounds created by humans

or machines that may disturb the environment and hinder
the normal living of organism.
– Causes of Noise Pollution
– Natural Causes:Violent volcanic eruptions,thundering etc.
– Man-Made Causes:Industries, Entertainment,fire Crackers,
Transportation, Domestic Appliances.
Effects of Pollution
-Over Human Health
– Bad air quality can kill many organisms including humans.
– Ozone pollution can cause respiratory
disease, cardiovascular disease, throat inflammation, chest
pain, and congestion. 
– Water pollution causes approximately 14,000 deaths per
day, mostly due to contamination of drinking water as by
untreated sewage.
– Lead and other heavy metals have shown the cause
neurological problems in infants.
– Noise pollution may cause hearing loss, high blood
pressure, stress, and sleep disturbance.

Effects of Pollution
-Over Environment
– Biomagnification describes situations where toxins (such
as heavy metals) may pass through trophic levels,
becoming exponentially more concentrated in the process.
– The emission of greenhouse gases(like
CO2,CH4,N2O,O3) leads to global warming which affects
ecosystems in many ways.
– Smog and haze can reduce the amount of sunlight
received by plants to carry out photosynthesis.
– Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides can cause acid
rain which lowers the pH value of soil. Soil can become
infertile and unsuitable for plants. This will affect
 organisms in the food web.
Pollution Control

– Use of Dust Collectors: System used to enhance the quality of air

released from industries.
– Sewage Treatment:  It is the process of
removing contaminants from wastewater. It includes physical,
chemical, and biological processes to remove these contaminants
and produce environmentally safe treated wastewater.
– Bioremediation: It is the process of in which microorganisms are
used to remove the contaminants from the environment.

– Implementing 3 R’s:Recycle,Reduce,Reuse
