ARE WE EFFECTIVE IN
SCREENING?
NINO BENJAMIN D. LIMJOCO
First Year GI FELLOW
BACKGROUND
According to the 2018 Global Cancer Statistics, colorectal cancer ranks
third in terms of incidence and second in terms of mortality with over
1.8 million new colorectal cancer cases and 881,000 deaths estimated
to occur in 2018.
The five year survival rate of CRC:
• In developed countries =65 %.
• In the Philippines = 40%. Bray, F. et al. Global cancer statistics 2018:
GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and
mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185
countries.
BACKGROUND
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is an increasingly prevalent malignancy in the
Philippines.
According to the 2010 Philippine Cancer Facts and Estimates it is the
most common cancer of the gastrointestinal tract.

JDS et al The Joint Philippine Society of

Gastroenterology (PSG) and Philippine Society of
Digestive Endoscopy (PSDE) Consensus Guidelines on
the Management of Colorectal Carcinoma
BACKGROUND
In the 2015 Cancer Facts and Estimates,
Colorectal Cancer : 3rd for both sexes (9%)
4th among males (11%)
3rd among females (7%).
9,625 new cases in both sexes

Laudico, A. et al. 2015 Philippine Cancer

Facts and Estimates. Philippine Cancer
Society, Manila 2015.
BACKGROUND
Increases at 50 years (males and females) then a steady increase from
1980 to 2007, with an annual change of 1.3% for both males and
females

Laudico, A. et al. 2015 Philippine Cancer Facts and

Estimates. Philippine Cancer Society, Manila 2015.
BACKGROUND
Thus, it is often thought of as a disease of the elderly, which makes
screening limited to these set of patients. However a significant
proportion of patients 40 years old and younger present with this
disease.

(JRRMMH) 2003
32 colon cancer & 41 rectal cancer patients : < 40 years old
• Right sided colon lesions
• Distal third in location of rectal cancer .
• Aggressive tumors
• Advanced lesions on surgery.

review of Cases. PJSS Vol. 58, No.1, January to March 2003.
Philippine General Hospital 2008
(unpublished)
20 percent of patients showed that the most common location of the
tumor was the rectum.
Adenocarcinomas (76%).
Mostly stage 3B at diagnosis (70%)
Majority were smokers (52%), occasional alcoholic beverage drinkers
(35%), overweight (48%), predominantly meat diet (78%), and with no
family history of cancer (88%).
The most common initial presentation was hematochezia (36%).

NDL et al Characteristics and Risk Factors of Colorectal

Carcinoma in the Young at Angeles University Foundation
Medical Center from July 2013 to June 2018
BACKGROUND
The natural history CRC presents a unique opportunity for early
intervention because the colon is accessible to examinations which
enable early identification and efficient removal of precursor
premalignant and/or early malignant lesions.
SIGNIFICANCE
• This study aims to update current local data on colorectal carcinoma
to guide clinicians in better care of our patients (e.g., earlier
surveillance for early detection of cancer)
OBJECTIVES
• To determine the demographics and clinical characteristics of patients
with colorectal carcinoma at UST
• To describe patients with colorectal carcinoma in terms of
• Demographics
• Baseline Characteristics
• Clinical Presentation
• Clinical Stage
