Domains of Human Development
Human development- the
way that people change
and grow across their life
span.
Which covers the growth of the
body and the brain, motor
sensory skills and even physical
health.

Physical Development
During Infancy (birth
to 2) the brain grows
in complexity and
efficiency
During early childhood
(3-8) handedness
appears
Middle childhood (9-11)
health is typically better
the than the other
period
During
adolescence (12-
18) puberty starts
Which covers our capacity to
learn, to speak, to
understand, to reason, and to
create.
Jean Piaget Theory

Cognitive Development
During infancy the
use of symbols
develop
During early
childhood memory
and language
improve
During middle
childhood
egocentrism
diminishes
During adolescence
the ability to think
abstractly develop
Jean Piaget
 Stages of
Cognitive
Development
Sensorimotor Stage: A period of
time between birth and age two
during which an infant’s knowledge
of the world is limited to his or her
sensory perceptions and motor
activities.
*Object permanence- directed
groping
*Early manifestation of intelligence
appear from sensory perception
The preoperational Stage: A period
between ages two and six during
which a child learns to use language.
During this stage, children do not
yet understand concrete logic,
cannot mentally manipulate
information and are unable to take
the point view of other people.
Concrete Operational Stage: A
period between ages seven and
eleven during which children gain a
better understanding or mental
operations. Children begin thinking
logically about concrete events, but
have difficulty understanding
abstract or hypothetical concepts.

Jean Piaget’s theory

Formal Operational Stage: A
period between age twelve to
adulthood when people develop
ability to think about abstract
concepts. Skills such as logical
thought, deductive reasoning
and systematic planning also
emerge during this stage.
Which includes our social
interactions with other people,
our emotions, attitudes, self-
identity, personality, beliefs and
values.

Psychosocial
Development
During
infancy self

control increases
During middle
childhood peers assume
greater importance
During adolescence
a search for identity
occurs
