Power Measurement

POWER MEASUREMENT
Example:
1.) A balanced 3ɸ load has a line current of 130 A @200 V line to line
and 0.862 lag pf. If two wattmeter are used to measure power being
drawn by the system, what are the wattmeter readings?

2.) A balanced load of pf = 0.78 lag is supplied from a 3ɸ 440 V

supply. The input as indicated by the sum of the readings of the two
wattmeter inserted in the supply is 28 kW. Find the reading of each
instrument?

3.) Given two wattmeter are connected at line a and line c. If VL = 230

Volts, the line current is 20 A and pf = 0.86. What is the reading of

wattmeter at line C?
4.) Three identical coils each having a resistance of 12 Ω and
reactance of 16Ω are connected a.) star b.) delta across a 460 V, 3ɸ
line. What are the readings of each wattmeter properly connected to
measure the power in each method of connection.

5.) Two wattmeter WB =850 Watts are connected to measure the

power drawn by the load supplied from 500 V, 3ɸ source. Find the
impedance of the load if it is connected ∆.

Measurement
Example
1.) Two wattmeter method is used to test 25 Hp, 230 V, 1800 rpm, 60 Hz,
3ɸ,I.M. When the line voltages are 230 V, one wattmeter reads 13400 W and
the other is 7400 W. Determine the motor pf and the line current it draws.;

2.) A wound rotor motor, 7.5 Hp, 230 v, 3ɸ takes a line current of 18.4 A when
operating at an efficiency of 88%. Calculate the indication of the wattmeters
connected to measure the power by:
a.) Potential Lead Shift Method
b.) Artificial Neutral Method
c.) T-Method
3.) A 3ɸ feeder corries, two lagging balanced loads. The power
absorbed by each is measured by two wattmeters method giving the
following readings

4.) A 3ɸ I.M. is connected across a 220 V, 3ɸ source. A wattmeter reads

600W when its current coil is connected in line 1 and its potential across
line 1 and 2. If the potential coil of the wattmeter is transferred to lines 2
and 3, the reading of the wattmeter is the same. Calculate the pf of the
motor.
5.) Two wattmeters are connected to measure the power drawn by the
load. The first wattmeter reads 4800W while the other reads 400 W after
reversing its current coil. Solve for the load power factor.
