THEORIES ON

THE ORIGIN
OF THE
UNIVERSE
WHAT IS UNIVERSE?
 is a huge wide-open space that holds
everything from the smallest particle to the
biggest galaxy. No one knows just how big
the Universe is. Astronomers try to measure
it all the time. They use a special instrument
called a spectroscope to tell whether an
object is moving away from Earth or toward
Earth. Based on the information from this
instrument, scientists have learned that the
universe is still growing outward in every
direction.
BIG BANG THEORY
 This theory was born of the observation
that other, as if they had all been
propelled by an ancient explosive force.
 some 10 billion to 20 billion years ago, a
massive blast allowed all the universe's
known matter and energy—even space
and time themselves—to spring from some
ancient and unknown type of energy.
BIG BANG THEORY
 The theory maintains that, in the instant—a
trillion-trillionth of a second—after the big bang,
the universe expanded with incomprehensible
speed from its pebble-size origin to astronomical
scope
 Many believe that as time passed and matter
cooled, more diverse kinds of atoms began to
form, and they eventually condensed into the
stars and galaxies of our present universe.
OTHER THEORIES
 The Big Bumba Theory
- According to the Boshongo people of central
Africa, in the beginning, there was only
darkness, water, and the great god Bumba.
One day Bumba, in pain from a stomach ache,
vomited up the sun. The sun dried up some of
the water, leaving land. Still in pain, Bumba
vomited up the moon, the stars, and then
some animals. The leopard, the crocodile, the
turtle, and finally, man.
 Bible
- According to Bishop Usher, the Book of
Genesis placed the creation of the world at 9
in the morning on October the 27th, 4,004 BC.
 Aristotle

- believed the universe had existed forever.

 General Theory of Relativity
 Introduced by Einstein in 1915
 space and time were no longer Absolute, no
longer a fixed background to events. Instead,
they were dynamical quantities that were
shaped by the matter and energy in the
universe.
 Steady State theory
 as galaxies moved apart, the idea was that
new galaxies would form from matter that
was supposed to be continually being created
throughout space.
