Introduction
• Expansion Joints are continuous, unobstructed slots constructed between two
parts of a building or structure permitting thermal or moisture expansion to
occur without damage to either part.
• Expansion joints can often serve as control and isolation joints.
• The width of an expansion joint depends on the building material and the
temperature range involved. It varies from material ¼”(6) to 1”(25) or more,
and should be calculated for each specific situation.
* The coefficient of surface expansion is approximately twice the linear
coefficient.
* The coefficient of volume expansion is approximately three times the linear
coefficient.
Necessary information
• All buildings are restrained to some degree. This restraint will induce
stresses with temperature changes.
• Temperature-induced stresses are the direct result of volume changes
between restrained points in a structure. An estimate of the
elongation or contraction caused by temperature change is obtained
by multiplying the coefficient of expansion of concrete α [about 5.5 x
10-6/F (9.9 x 10-6/C)] by the length of the structure and the
temperature change.

Expansion joints in walls
• In brick or stone masonry expansion
joints normally need not be
necessary, except in the case of long
walls exceeding 30 m in length; in
such long walls the expansion joints
shall be not less than 15 mm wide
and shall be spaced not more than
30 m apart.
• For walls below ground level or for
walls subject to water pressure, use
of an efficient water bar is essential
in the expansion joints.

Expansion joints in roofs
• The expansion joints used in
roofs shall be finished such as to
obtain an effective seal against
penetration of water. A water
bar shall be installed in the
expansion joint. The joint and
the cover slabs shall be suitably
treated for waterproofing
