PUBLISHING YOUR

RESEARCH WORKS
IN THE FIELDS OF
HUMANITIES AND
SOCIAL SCIENCES

Dr. F.P.A. Demeterio III

Full Professor, Filipino Department
College of Liberal Arts
De La Salle University
INTRODUCTION

My talk this afternoon is about the publication of research

works in the fields of humanities and social sciences.

I divided my talk into four parts:

1.Short Run Through My Most Read Essays in My

academia.edu page;
2.Planning and the Publication Pyramid;
3.Publication of Journal Articles; and
4.Publication of Books.
MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

Since I have more than 60 published articles, I will just

share with your ten of my most read articles, based on the
analytics of my Academia.edu page.

I hope this exercise will give you an idea of what kind of

researches I am doing and in which journals I am
publishing them.
MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

For the past 60 days, these are my ten most viewed

research papers:
MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

For the past two months, my

research article “Isang
Semyolohikal na Pagsusuri sa
mga Kontradiksiyong Nakapaloob
sa Panlipunang Kritisismo ni
Gloc-9” is the most viewed/read
among research articles.

I wrote this in 2013 because I

liked Gloc 9 then. That was way
before he sang for Binay’s
presidential campaign.
MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

But my main intention for writing this research article was to

write an essay on Roland Barthes’ semiology that could be
easily understood by my students.

Now, whenever I have students who wish to work on

semiology, I will just ask them to read first this essay.

My article demonstrated that although Gloc 9 sounds

radical, his ideology is actually very conservative and at the
same time incoherent. But what is important is that his
music can give us an opportunity to reflect on some of the
problems of the Philippine society.

I published this essay in Malay Journal, a CHED listed

journal.
MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

My essay “Ang mga Teorya ng

Relatividad ni Albert Einstein:
Isang Pagsusuri sa Kahandaan
ng Wikang Filipino sa
Pagtatalakay sa mga Paksa ng
Makabagong Agham” is my
second most viewed/read essay.
This used to be my most
viewed/read essay.

I wrote this in 2009 as my first

submission to the prestigious
Malay Journal of DLSU.
MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

I wrote this to prove that the Filipino language is ready to

tackle even the physics of Albert Einstein.

This essay suggests that the only hindrance why we are

not using the Filipino language in our educational system is
the incapacity of our teachers to do it.

That there are many Filipinos reading this essay means

that there is a hunger for scientific materials that are written
in Filipino.
MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

My essay “Ang Nobelang ’Si

Amapola sa 65 na Kabanata, ni
Ricardo Lee Bilang Kontra-
Diskurso ng Baklang Manilenyo
Laban sa Homopobikong
Kamalayang Filipino” is my third
most viewed/read research
article.

I wrote this in 2013 after reading

the novel on my way to Bangkok
and realizing how open and
tolerant Bangkok is to
homosexuals compared to the
ultra hypocrite and homophobic
Metro Manila.
MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

I wrote most part of this research article in my hotel near

Patpong and on the airplane on my way back to Manila.

I just pointed out here the strategies that Ricky Lee used in
combatting Filipino homophobia.

I published this again in our CHED listed Malay Journal.

MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

My essay “Ang Kautusan ng

Departamento ng Edukasyon
Bilang 74, Serye 2009: Isang
Pagsusuri sa Katatagan ng
Programang Edukasyon sa
Unang Wika (MLE) ng Filipinas” is
my fourth most viewed/read
research article.

I wrote this in 2010, right after the

Department Order was relased.
MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

I used the established principles of Mother Language

Education as the framework to critique the Department
Order.

My research article established the compromises and flaws

of the Department Order.

I published this essay again in our CHED listed Malay

Journal.
MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

My essay “Sistematikong
Multilingguwalismo: Lunsaran ng
mas Matatag na Wikang
Pambansa” is my fifth most
viewed/read research article.

This used to be also my most

viewed/read research article and
senior high school students are
reading this research article.

I wrote this as a professorial chair

paper in 2012, and I banked this
essay on my previous critique of
DepEd Order 74, Series 2009.
MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS
I argued in this paper that eventhough our current mother
language education is flawed, we need to support it and
just critique and improve it along the way.

The history of our failed language policies is already very

alarming and embarrassing.
MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

I published this essay again in our CHED listed Malay

Journal.
MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

Our essay “Ang Pilosopiya ni

Pierre Bourdieu bilang Batayang
Teoretikal sa Araling Pilipino” is
my sixth most viewed/read
research article.

I wrote this in 2014 as one of my

first collaborative publications with
my graduate students.

This is a theoretical work aimed

at introducing my students to the
very useful theories of the French
sociologist and philosopher Pierre
Bourdieu.
MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

I have this project of writing a series of theoretical workd

aimed at making the lives of my students easier when they
move into thesis or dissertation.

This essay existed for a long time as a powerpoint lecture

presentation.

My collaborating author used this as a framework for her

undergraduate thesis.

We published this in the CHED listed Kritike Journal.

MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

Our essay “Ang Ugnayan ng

Wika, Pananaliksik at
Internasyonalisasyong
Akademiko” is my seventh most
viewed/read research article.

I wrote this in 2015 as a plenary

lecture for a national conference
of PSLLF.
MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

I merely asked another graduate student to convert my

powerpoint lecture into a research article.

Hence, this is again another of my collaborations with my

graduate students.

We published this again in our CHED listed Malay Journal.

MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

My essay “Ang Negatibong

Imahen ng Maynila sa Nobelang
Inferno ni Dan Brown” is my
eighth most viewed/read research
article.

I wrote this in 2014 as a way of

re-starting my mind after my
fellowship at the Catholic
University of America. I realized
that I enjoyed Washington DC so
much that I was doing very little
research there.
MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

To shake off the rust in my brain I decided to work on

something easy and light, such as examining what are the
things that Dan Brown said about Manila, and which of
these are true or false, and what should Filipinos do with
Brown’s Inferno.

I published this essay in the CHED listed Kritike Journal.

MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

My essay “Kolonisasyon at mga

Inuming Nakalalasing ng mga
Sinaunang Bisaya ng Samar at
Leyte” is my ninth most
viewed/read research article.

I wrote this in 2012 because I

wanted to go home to my
province with a pretext of doing
fieldwork (research is fun). I
actually did some fieldwork there.
MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

The research article started with my puzzlement why

Francisco Alcina is mentioning 5 Visayan alcoholic
beverages (tuba, arak, intus, kabarawan and pangasi)
while Visayans today only know of tuba.

My research article argued how colonization erased the

culture of making and drinking the four other Visayan
alcoholic beverages.

I published this essay in our CHED listed Malay Journal.

MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

My essay “Iris Marion Young’s

Theory of Structural Justice and
Collective Responsibility” is my
tenth most viewed/read research
article.

I wrote this in 2014 as part of my

book project entitled “The Socio-
Political Discourses of the
Catholic Bishops’ Conference of
the Philippines: an Analysis from
the Perspective of Young’s
Theories of Structural Justice and
Collective Responsibility” (in
press).
MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

I stumbled on the philosophy of Young, because I was

applying at that time for my research fellowship at the
Catholic University of America. I told myself to look for an
American philosopher suitable for the theme “justice” for
that year’s fellowship.

I already have one PhD student who finish his dissertation

because of this work. You know him very well.

I published this version of my essay in the Scientia Journal

of San Beda College. A longer version was published in the
Catholic University of America. Another version still will
appear in my fourth book soon.
MY MOST READ WORKS FOR THE PAST 60 DAYS

I want to cap my run through with a few observations:

First, in as far as my articles are concerned, my Filipino

articles appear to be more read than my English articles.

Second, Malay Journal and Kritike Journal may not be ISI

or Scopus listed, but my articles in them are more read
than my articles in ISI and Scopus listed journals.

Thus, in selecting to which journal are submitting a potential

publication you have to be very clear about your intentions.
Because the term “high impact journal” is a relative term.
THE PUBLICATION PYRAMID

Before we start talking about how to publish our research

works, it would be very advantageous for us to take a look
at the research pyramid proposed by the German Research
Foundation in 2010.
THE PUBLICATION PYRAMID
As we move up the pyramid
publications become more
valuable, but at the same time
Books
Authorship more scarce and more difficult to
produce.
Books
Editorship
But this is the pyramid
Book Chapters according to the German
Research Foundation. To
Journal Articles
make our publication
Conference Papers planning more accurate
let us take a look at
Theses/Dissertations DLSU’s publication

THE PUBLICATION PYRAMID

Even with your own publication pyramid clearly drawn, the

question “to which level of the pyramid should we publish?”
has no exact answer.

It would depend on your personal hierarchy of reasons why

you should publish and the urgency of such reasons.

For the For One’s For One’s For One’s For One’s For One’s
Country Peers University Promotion Prestige Financial Gain
THE PUBLICATION PYRAMID

Because our motives and contexts are changing, it would

be good to have short ranged and long ranged publication
plans.

Hence, your short term publication plans

could target conference papers and refereed
journal articles, while your long range plans
should target ISI/Scopus listed journal articles
and books.

Publishing in ISI/Scopus listed journal articles and books

are the subject matter of our remaining two sections.
THE JOURNAL ARTICLE
Before we move on to the strategies on
how to publish in ISI or Scopus listed
journals, there are some limitations
that we need to properly understand
and consider in our planning.

First, we have to know that ISI and Scopus listings are

games that are primarily intended for the natural sciences.
Their metrics and analytics on citation and impact will make
sense only in the context of the natural sciences.

Second, there are simply more listed journals on the natural

sciences than on the social sciences, and there are more
listed journals on the social sciences than on the
humanities.
THE JOURNAL ARTICLE

This is the initial bottleneck for

us coming from the fields of
humanities and the social
sciences.

Third, this bottleneck will tighten further once

we realize that humanities and social
sciences journals are by nature closely tied to
their cultural contexts. This means our
humanities and social sciences articles that
are tied to our Philippine contexts would have
the pass the needle’s eye if we are to submit
these to foreign humanities or social sciences
journals.
THE JOURNAL ARTICLE

The most logical thing for us to do is to submit our articles

to Filipino journals. But, fourth, the problem is that there are
only very few Filipino journals that are listed in ISI and
Scopus.
THE JOURNAL ARTICLE

So, how do we publish in ISI

and Scopus listed journals then?

My first answer is for you to collaborate with our senior

professors who already know the ins and outs of ISI and
Scopus publishing.
THE JOURNAL ARTICLE

The principle of collaborating with senior

professors is that you will have a hands
on exposure to both the research and
publication process.

A free rider will sooner or later find himself being dumped

without acquiring any functional experience in both
research and publication.
THE JOURNAL ARTICLE

If you do not want to collaborate with senior professor,

because you do not want to work with teams, or because
you feel that you are already in a stage in which you should
be the one leading your own research teams; then you will
be like me, somebody who learned the craft of publishing in
ISI and Scopus listed journals the hard way.
THE JOURNAL ARTICLE

These will be my advise for you. First, know the Philippine

journals that are ISI or Scopus listed. There are very few of
these journals in humanities and social sciences:
THE JOURNAL ARTICLE

Silliman Journal, Humanities Diliman, Kritika Kultura,

Philippine Studies, Philippine Political Science Journal, The
Asia-Pacific Education Researcher, Asia-Pacific Social
Science Review, Asia and Pacific Migration Journal,
Philosophia, and Plaridel Journal.
THE JOURNAL ARTICLE

Second, your may expand your list of target journals by

looking of Asian studies journals based in the ASEAN
region or in the nearby Asian countries outside the ASEAN
region.

You may use the following webpages for such search:

Third, you may expand further your list of target journals by

looking for Asian studies journals based in the west, using
the same webpages.
THE JOURNAL ARTICLE
Fourth, once you have your target journal, you have to
tailor fit your article into the format, themes, canonical
theories, canonical bibliography of such journal.

In other words, do not appear as a total

stranger at the doorstep of a journal, but
somebody who did a thorough
reconnaissance of the terrain which you
are about to enter.

Fifth, be sure that your article is well researched and well

written. Consider investing some amount for editing.

Sixth, do not engage in multiple submission. Otherwise you

will risk having multiple blacklisting.
THE JOURNAL ARTICLE

Seventh, understand that the

review, revision and printing
process will take time. Take
advantage of such time by
moving on to your next research
and publication project.

Eighth, when the review and

evaluation come, do not take
them too personally. Read them
once. Relax. Read them again
when you are no longer
emotionally charged. Do the
revisions. Do not quarrel with
the reviewers and evaluators.
THE JOURNAL ARTICLE

Ninth, you may respectfully and humbly argue on points

which you cannot agree or follow.

Tenth, in case of a deadlock,

respectfully and humbly
withdraw your paper. Do not
burn bridges with that journal.
You will need that journal in the
near future. Do not also leave
the journal hanging as to your
revision. You might get
blacklisted.
THE BOOK

We in the fields of humanities and social sciences have a

bias for the book. We have this idea that journals are just
for practice, the real things are books.

In principle, books are not necessarily more difficult to

write, they are just more time consuming to write.

I can only talk about book publication from my very limited

experience with my three books already published, one
book in press, and one or two manuscripts in storage.
THE BOOK

My first book was not intended as a book

but as an article only. Since the research
project was funded by URCO, I was
obliged to spend serious time with it and I
realized that my text kept on growing until
it became a book manuscript.

I don’t have any tip on how it got published. I think I was

just lucky, I submitted my manuscript at the time when
DLSU-APO was transitioning into DLSU-PH, and there
was no pending projects at that time. I got my book
published rather quick.
THE BOOK

I think when you submit a

manuscript, you yourself should
not have any time frame. You
should be ready to wait and
wait and wait. This is why books
are not for professors who are
rushing for publication output.

DLSU gave my first book an outstanding book award in

Filipino in 2013.
THE BOOK

My second book was not also intended as

a book but as an article again. Since the
research project was funded by NCCA, I
was likewise obliged to spend serious time
with it and I realized that my text kept on
growing until it became a book
manuscript.

The Austrian Ambassador to the

Philippines, Wilhelm Donko, was
instrumental to the very quick publication
of my book by DLSU-PH.
THE BOOK

I knew that he is interested in using Ferdinand Blumentritt

as an icon of the historic ties between the Philippines and
Austria. So, I sent him a publication grant application. And
he immediately said yes he can give me some amount.
And so my book was published in less than six months.

Lesson: DLSU-PH would process your manuscript

submission if an external funding agency is willing to
partner with it.

DLSU gave my second book an outstanding book award in

English in 2014.
THE BOOK

My third book is a
collaborative project with
Dr. Roberto Javier, Dr.
Raymund Habaradas, Dr.
Melvin Jabar, and Dr.
Ron Resurreccion.

From the very start it was intended to be a book. I used my

experience that DLSU-PH will publish a manuscript quickly
if an external funding agency will partner with it. The
research project was funded by Unilab Foundation. Thus it
was not difficult for us to ask for an additional publication
funding after the project was completed.
THE BOOK

DLSU gave our collaborative book an outstanding book

award in English in 2015.

My fourth book is still in press. It

is a result of a research project
that was funded by URCO for
my fellowship at the Catholic
University of America.

The manuscript is about CBCP and

structural justice theory of Iris Marion
Young.
THE BOOK

Again, it was not intended to be a book manuscript but a

journal article. It simply grew into a book again.

While my manuscript on
CBCP and Iris Marion Young
is under review, I wrote
another book manuscript on
five Lasallian Filipino
Philosophers, Quito, Abulad,
Ceniza, Timbreza and
Gripaldo. This is funded by
URCO and this time I
intended this to be a book.
THE BOOK

I will submit my manuscript to

DLSU-PH after it starts lay-
outing my book in press. I am
willing to wait and wait and wait.
Because I have learned that it
will be faster to wait when you
will be doing a new project.
THE BOOK

•I am currently polishing my
sixth book. This is critique of
how research is pursued in
the top six research-
productive Philippine
universities. Again, I merely
intended this to be a journal
article. But the text seems
to be insisting that it should
become another book. I
hope I can finish close
project before the start of
the next term.
CONCLUSION

My talk this afternoon was about the publication of research

works in the fields of humanities and Philippine studies.

I divided my talk into four parts:

1.Short Run Through My Most Read Essays in My

academia.edu page;
2.Planning and the Publication Pyramid;
3.Publication of Journal Articles; and
4.Publication of Books.

I hope you were able to glean something useful from my

talk.

Thank you for listening to me.
