CHAPTER 3

THE DOCUMENTED ESSAY ON

A CONCEPT
BEFORE-READING TASK:
Write one or two paragraphs,
speculating about what it would
be like to go out on a date with
someone who talks like an
academic paper. Describe both
the experience and the person.
ACADEMIC
 It refers to a student’s
informed, scholarly, and
insightful contribution to
ongoing discussions of
relevant topics or issues.
These are the common
misconceptions about academic
writing:
 “highfaluting” or jargon-
filled language
 a stiff style and the absence of
the writer’s voice or opinion
 boring and rehashed topics
Scintillate, Scintillate, globule
aurific
Fair would I fathom thy nature
specific
Loftily perched in the ether
capacious
Strongly resembling a gem
carbonaceous
(Rocco & Hatcher, 2011)
“thesaurus syndrome”
 looking for the
longest possible
synonym for a word.

universally known)
DOCUMENTED ESSAY
 Both a standard essay and
documented essay consist
of an introduction with an
explicitly stated central
argument or thesis, three or
more supporting paragraphs,
and a conclusion.
STANDARD ESSAY
 generally known facts and
personal experiences of the
writer
DOCUMENTED ESSAY
 requires concrete supporting
information from relevant
sources.
BEFORE-READING
QUESTION:
Look for the meaning of the
Filipino word “KATAPATAN.”
Explain in English what this
word means.
“WHAT IS
PLAGIARISM?”
By: Teresita Gimenez-Maceda
PLAGIARISM
 It is when you borrow
someone else’s words
and make these
appear as your own
SEVERAL WAYS OF PLAGIARISING:

The first and most obvious kind of

plagiarism
A person copies word-for-word a
sentence, a paragraph or whole
article written by another author and
does not enclose the copied words in
quotation.
The second kind of
plagiarism
A person borrows
someone else’s ideas,
rewards them to make the
ideas seem like her/his
own
The third kind of plagiarism
A person translates to Filipino
or other Philippine languages
someone else’s ideas that were
expressed in different
languages and fails to enclose
the translated material in
quotation marks
KATAPATAN
is all that is required
for us to keep our
integrity and dignity
intact.
WRITING
AS A PROCESS
Donald M. Murray
 proposed that
teachers should
“Teach Writing as a
Process, not a
Product.”
THE THREE STAGES OF WRITING
1. Pre-writing- everything that takes
place before the first draft.
2.Writing- the act of producing a first
draft
3.Re-writing – researching, rethinking,
redesigning- satisfying process of
making every word right.
WRITING
ABOUT CONCEPTS
CONCEPT
 is a synonym for an idea,
notion, or thought; may
also refer to a perception
or impression of
something.
Three texts are discussed here as examples of
writing about concept:

“Pinoy Baduy”
Doreen Fernandez

“Textual Poachers”
Henry Jenkins

“For the Filipino Woman That You Are”

Karla Bianca M. Labog
“Kababae mong tao.”
This expression is commonly
mistaken to be a compliment, but in
fact implies how low the people’s
expectations of women are.

In addition , this expression also has

its counterpart for men which is:
“Kalalaki mong tao.”
In conclusion, the existence of
these expressions proves that
gender inequality, sexism, and
gender-stereotyping are still truly
relevant issues which are too
complicated and evident to bring
to an end despite several feminist
movements and gender equality
campaigns.
