PROBLEM SOLVING

Newton’s 3 Laws of Motion

1st Law of Motion:
Things that are still stay still and things that are
moving keep moving with a steady speed unless
a force of some kind pushes or pulls on them.
2nd Law of Motion:
When a force acts (pushes or pulls) on an object,
it changes the object’s speed or direction (in
other words it makes the object accelerate).
The bigger the force, the more the object
accelerates.
3rd Law of Motion:
When a force acts on an object, there’s equal
force (called a reaction) acting in the opposite
direction. This law is sometimes written that
“actions are equal and opposite.”
  Force = mass x acceleration
F = Newton (N) or
Kg.m/s.1/s
m = kg
Acceleration =

Kilogram meter per second square

4.0 newtons applied to it. What is the resulting
acceleration of the object?

with a force of 500 newtons?
2. The mass of a large car is 1000 kg. How much force
would be required to accelerate the car at a rate of
3 m/sec2?
3. A 50 kg skater pushed by a friend accelerates 5
m/sec2. How much force did the friend apply?
4. A force of 250 N is applied to an object that
accelerates at a rate of 5 m/sec2. What is the mass
of the object?
Newton’s Third Law

For every action there is an equal and opposite

reaction.
Forces and Interactions
When you push on the wall, the wall pushes on you.
Newton’s Third Law
When the girl jumps to shore, the boat moves backward.
Identifying Action and Reaction Pairs
When action is A exerts force on B, the reaction is simply B exerts force on A.
