ASHOL LALL: BEACON OF SUSTAINABLE

1. THEIR BELIEF: ARCHITECTURE

• Social inequity: To distribute wealth and knowledge with the means of building production
• Cultural subversion: To construct a self-confident culture by maintaining the initiative of the  creative imagination
• Environmental impact:  To restore environmental sustainability through bioclimatic spatial design and selective and innovative use of technologies

IRRAD Gurgaon by Ashok B Lall Architects

The Institute of Rural Research And Development (IRRAD) houses the headquarters for the Non-profit Government Organization, S.M. Sehgal Foundation (SMSF)  which works on development projects in rural Haryana.

I Have jotted down the features of the building that can help us in our design to make it a sustainable approach

• The building accomplishes a number of environmental goals. The excavated soil is used for making bricks in situ and the runoff water is collected for ground water recharge ensuring zero runoff from the site.
• The rainwater from the roof is collected to fulfill the water requirement for an efficient water cooling based air conditioning system.
• Internal courtyards provide daylight and ventilation thereby reducing the load on artificial lighting and mechanical ventilation systems. All the areas are sunlit. There is hardly any requirement of artificial lighting during
daytime.

• A 35 kilowatt of electricity is generated by photovoltaic panels on the roof that suffices the basic electrical load of computers, lighting, fans and mechanical ventilation.

It is designed to minimize the ecological foot print and carbon dioxide emissions due to the type of material used, For instance wood is used instead of aluminum for doors and windows and the use of burnt brick is
minimized by using the excavated soil. This results in 30 percent reduction of CO2 emissions.
• The aesthetic quality of the building is derived from the principles of sustainable design – the use of natural materials, minimal use of glass, interesting shading device and integration of sheltered courtyard spaces
makes for its unique beauty and comfort as well as the graceful feel. In fact a special feature of the building is deriving beauty from waste.
• Its windows are double glazed to reduce transmission of heat. The building's roof is heat reflective and it has used renewable rubber wood and bamboo instead of aluminum in AC vents and window panel frames.
• To improve thermal performance, external walls of the IRRAD building have been insulated by padding them with polystyrene sheets. These walls absorb only a fraction of the heat.
• Presence of ceiling fans in an air-conditioned building may look odd, but combining the two reduces the load on cooling plant further and also counters the staleness in indoor air.

For Lall, constructing the IRRAD building was like a demonstration project, a proof that building a green building is not rocket science.
