SYNOPSIS PRESENTATION

UNDER THE GUIDENCE OF
Ms.Neerja mam
Asst. Professor(Dept. of Med-Surg Nursing)

INTRODUCTION

“An approach to the assessment of clinical

competence in which the components of
competence are assessed in a well planned or
structured way with attention being paid to
objectivity”
(Harden 1988).
CONTI…

• OSCE was developed in University of Dundee

(Dundee, Scotland) in the early 1975 by Dr. Harden
and his colleagues

• OSCE is a means of assessing clinical competency

based on objective testing through direct
observation.

• More than 50 countries accepted it

BACKGROUND OF STUDY
• The objective structured clinical examination
(OSCE) has been in use in the assessment of
medical students for over 20years.
• In the last 10 years, there has been increasing
interest in this form of assessment in other
health professional disciplines, such as nursing
and physiotherapy
(Walters and Adams, 2002).
CONTI….
• Moreover, the important of feedback from
nursing students and faculty has been useful
in effecting improvements to the process and
greater emphasis has been placed on the
teaching and evaluation of history taking,
communication, and technical competencies.
NEED FOR STUDY
• National nursing research unit, Kings
College, London, 2009 expressed its
Concern about the quality and safety of
health care and created a mandate for
change in the preparation of health care
professionals. Therefore, the supervisors to
be trained in acquiring skills in
evaluating / grading students in their
clinical placements.
CONT….
• According to Dolly.G (2007) the traditional
methods of evaluation through the use of
behavioral objectives and tools like formal
or structured test in the classroom or clinical
skill verification have been criticized and
not enough to provide a holistic assessment
of individual learning.
CONT….

• Mosaley LG, et al,. (2005) states that the

present day nursing curriculum demands a
move away from the conventional academic
forms of assessment to more creative and
innovative ones. Hence alternative methods
are being sought to assess a broader range of
student knowledge and capabilities.
CONT….

• Zentralbl Chir, (2012) stated that in this

method a large number of students can be
assessed relatively in a shorter period of time
unlike the conventional method. Moreover the
feedback received from the faculty and
students regarding this OSCE as one of the
teaching and evaluation method shows
favorable one.
PROBLEM STATEMENT

A study to evaluate the effectiveness of Video

Assisted Teaching Program regarding
Objective Structured Clinical Examination in
terms of knowledge and attitude among B.sc
nursing students at TMCON, Moradabad.
OBJECTIVES

• To assess the level of knowledge and

attitude of b.sc nursing students regarding
OSCE.

• To assess the effectiveness of VATP on

knowledge & attitude of b.sc nursing
students regarding OSCE.
PURPOSE

The purpose of this study is to enhance the

knowledge and to develop positive attitude of
nursing students toward OSCE and to promote
OSCE as a examination method.
CONT….

• To find out the association between pre-test

level of knowledge and attitude among b.sc
nursing students in selected demographic
variables.
HYPOTHESIS
• H1: There will be significant improvement in
the post test knowledge score of b.sc nursing
students regarding OSCE.
• H2: There will be significant improvement in
the post test attitude score of b.sc nursing
students regarding OSCE.
CONT….

H3: There will be significant association

between pre -test level of knowledge & attitude
with selected demographic variables.
ASSUMPTIONS

• B.sc nursing students will have limited

knowledge regarding OSCE.
• Increase in the level of knowledge will
influence the development of positive attitude
in b.sc nursing students toward OSCE.
CONT….

• Socio-demographic variables contribute to the

level of knowledge & attitude of b.sc nursing
students with regard to OSCE.
VARIABLES

• Independent variable: Video assisted

teaching program (VATP)
• Dependent Variables: Knowledge & Attitude
• Demographic variables:
• Age
• Gender
• Previous knowledge on OSCE
• Sources of information regarding OSCE

DEFINITION OF TERMS
VATP

• Operational definition
Video assisted teaching refers to planned
educational session of 45 mins on knowledge
regarding OSCE and its application in nursing.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
OSCE
• Conceptual definition
An OSCE is a type of examination often used in
health sciences. It is designed to test clinical skill
performance and competence in a range of skills.
It is a practical, real-world approach to learning
and assessment.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
OSCE
• Operational definition
Refers to a systematically developed objective
type of structured/planned
programme/examination and its application in
nursing.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Knowledge
• Conceptual definition
The fact or condition of knowing something with
familiarity gained through experience
or association.

DEFINITION OF TERMS
Knowledge
• Operational definition
In this study Knowledge refers to general
information about Objective Structured Clinical
Examination and its application in nursing which
are assessed by close ended knowledge
questionnaire.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Attitude
• Conceptual definition
A feeling or opinion about something or
someone, or a way of behaving
DEFINITION OF TERMS
Attitude
• Operational definition
In this study attitude refers to opinion of B.sc
nursing students about OSCE which are assessed
by 4 point likerts scale.
CONCEPTUAL FRAME
WORK

A conceptual framework for the present study is

based on general system theory with input,
process, output and feedback. It serves as a
model for viewing people as an interacting with
the environment. The theory was developed by
Ludwig Von Bertalanffy in 1968.
CONCEPTUAL FRAME
WORK

INPUT
• In the general system theory input is the term
for movement of matter, energy or information
from the environment. In the present study the
inputs are the Socio- Demographic Performa,
close ended knowledge questionnaire, and 4
point likert scale based on OSCE.
CONCEPTUAL FRAME
WORK

PROCESS
• In theory the processes used by the system to
convert raw materials or energy from the
environment into products that are used either
by the system itself or the environment.
Process for the present study
CONCEPTUAL FRAME
WORK

• Process for the present study Investigator

applied the closed ended knowledge
questionnaire and 4 point likert scale based on
OSCE to students for identify the pre level of
knowledge and attitude among them regarding
OSCE, students then exposed to treatment
VATP on OSCE and its application in nursing.
CONCEPTUAL FRAME
WORK

• Post-test will be taken after 5 days by using

the same close ended knowledge questionnaire
and 4 point likert scale based on OSCE.
CONCEPTUAL FRAME
WORK

OUTPUT
• It refers to energy matter or information
disposed by the system as a result of its
process. In the present study it refers to the
post-test level of knowledge and attitude
among b.sc nursing students regarding OSCE
after undergoing treatment as VATP.
CONCEPTUAL FRAME
WORK

FEEDBACK
• It is the process that enables a system to
regulate itself and provides information about
the system output and its feedback as input. In
the present study, the feedback can be
initiated after estimating output when there is a
low score in the student knowledge and
CONCEPTUAL FRAME
WORK

their attitude toward OSCE. They may be placed

once again in the circuit to improve their
knowledge & attitude.
DELIMITATIONS

• This study is limited to nursing students only.

• Limited to knowledge and attitude of nursing

students regarding OSCE.
RESEARCH
METHODOLOGY

• Research Approach: A evaluative approach is

used for the present study
