The caloric-Kinetic Theory

The Caloric theory
• The caloric theory was first
proposed Antoine Lavoisier and
widely accepted in the 18th century
of the phenomena of heat and
combustion in terms of the flow of
an imaginary fluid known as caloric.
• The idea of an imaginary fluid to
represent heat helped explain many
but not all aspects of heat
phenomena.

The Kinetic Theory
• Over four hundred years the
Kinetic Molecular Theory has
been developed by a number of
scientists including Rudolf
Clausius.
• States that heat is due to motions
inside a substance.
• Greater internal energy leads to
hotter objects and this heat can be
transferred to colder objects

Did the new theory solve the problem?
• Provided a framework for understanding gases and predicting
their behaviour
• Provides scientist with a useful framework for understanding
how the behaviour of molecules influences the behaviour of
different states of matter
Why was it abandoned?
• Rumford experiment proved that heat is not a substance
because it can never ran out.
