LESSON LEARNING OUTCOMES
Lesson Learning Outcomes

• read different types of processes and procedures.

• organize the sequence of processes and procedures presented in linear or non-linear forms.
• identify passive verbs in a description of process or procedure correctly.
Do you know how these products are made ?

These products are

produced in a process
whereby a series of related
tasks or methods turns the
raw materials into
products.
A Description of a Process or Procedure can be presented in linear
and non-linear forms

non-linear) and answer all
the questions.

Please click on Practice 1

Task 1: Similarities vs Differences Text 2

a) What are the texts about ? Text 1

b) What are the similarities?

c). What are the differences?

Click on the pictures to read the texts again.

Task 1: Similarities vs Differences
a) What are the texts about ?
The texts describe how olive oil is made.
b) What are the similarities?
• Both texts explain how olives (fruits) are processed and transformed into olive oil (product).
• There are many action words used to describe the process. The sentences are written in passive
voice. For example, ‘are washed’ ‘is churned’ ‘is removed and recycled’, ‘are crushed’, ‘can be
filtered’
c). What are the differences?
• Words are used to describe the process in Text 1 while pictures with some words are used in Text 2.
• The sequence connectors ( next, then, finally, subsequently) are used to organize the sequence of steps in Text
1. Arrows are used to organize sequence in Text 2.
Action words, Sequence connectors & Passive Voice

• Sequence connectors are used to show the order in which things

happen in a process.

• Action words are used extensively in describing what happen in a

process.

• Passive voice is used to give emphasis on the action taken rather than
the doer of the action.
Sequence Connectors
• Sequence connectors are words and phrases that are used to show the
order in which things happen in a process.
Action Words & Passive Voice
Example of Sequence Connectors and Passive Voice in a Description of
a Process
Tips to Identify the Sequence of
Processes
• Trace the transformation of the raw materials throughout the process.
Example:
olive (fruits) olive paste oil + pomace + vegetation water extra virgin
olive / virgin olive oil / refined olive oil/olive pomace oil

• Look for sequence connectors / arrows.

Examples of sequence connectors :-
Beginning of a process - firstly, initially, at first
During a process – next, then, after, before, once
End of a process – finally, at last, the final step
