LPP

ASHUTOSH KAR
Problem
• A firm manufactures three products A, B and C. The profits are Rs.3, 2
and 4 respectively for each unit of the products. The firm has two
machines and below is the required processing time in minutes for
each machine on each product. Machine X and Y have 2000 and 2500
machine minutes respectively. The firm can manufacture at least 100
A, but not more than 150 A, 200 B, 50 C. Formulate the LPP.
Products/ A B C
Machines
X 4 3 5
Y 2 2 4
Solution
Products Machine X Machine Y Units (Max) Profit

A 4 2 150 3
B 3 2 200 2
C 5 4 50 4
Total time 2000 2500
Solution
• Let x units of Product A, y units of Product B and z units of Product C
are to be produced to maximize the profit
• Max z= 3x+2y+4z
• Sub to,
• Machine X: 4x+3y+5z≤ 2000
• Machine Y: 2x+2y+4z ≤2500
• 100 ≤x ≤150 x≥100 and x≤ 150
• 0 ≤y ≤200 y≥0 and y≤ 200
• 0 ≤z ≤50
Problem
• A hospital has the following requirements for nurses. Nurses
report to the hospital wards at the beginning of each period
and work for eight consecutive hours. The hospital wants to
determine the minimum number of nurses so that there may
be sufficient number of nurses available for each period.
Formulate the above as a LPP. The table is given in the next
slide.
Problem
Period Clock time (24 hour a day) Minimum number of nurses
required

1 6 a.m.-10 a.m. 60
2 10 a.m.-2 p.m. 70
3 2 p.m.-6 p.m. 60
4 6 p.m.-10 p.m. 50
5 10 p.m.-2 a.m. 20
6 2 a.m-6 a.m. 30
Solution
• Let xj be the number of nurses reporting to the hospital at the beginning of each period.
• Min z= x1+x2+x3+x4+x5+x6
• Sub to,
• x1+x6 ≥ 60
• x2+x1 ≥ 70
• x3+x2 ≥60
• x4+x3 ≥50
• x5+x4≥20
• x6+x5≥30
• x1,x2,x3,x4,x5,x6≥0
