Rock, soil, weather

 Rock sorting

Create a collection of rocks. Think about getting everyone

to bring in their own rocks or go on a rock hunt around the
local area – either with the students or by yourself.

Encourage the students to sort and classify the rocks. Ask

them to explain why they sorted them in that manner.

 Soil is a filter

Poke a few holes in the bottom of a cup. Half fill the cup
with sand. Pour in some dirty water – even add some
colouring. Observe what happens to the water after it has
been filtered by the sand.
 Soil up close
Collect some different types of soils. Put them in small
containers and use the iPad/iPhone microscopes to
observe the particles.
