Why K to 12?
1.K to 12 makes the Philippine education
system at par with the international
standard of 12 year basic education thereby
contributing to a better educated society
capable of pursuing productive
employment, entrepreneurship, or higher
education studies.
2. Every K to 12 graduate is ready to go
into different paths – higher education,
middle level skills development,
employment or entrepreneurship.
3. The K to 12 graduates are expected to
be equipped with 21st century skills like
information, media and technology
skills, learning and innovation skills,
effective communication skills, and life
and career skills.
4. Curriculum Enhancement for K to 12
now gives more focus to allow mastery of
learning. For Senior High School grades
(Grade 11 and 12), core subjects such as
Mathematics, Science, and Language will
be strengthened.
Specialization or tracks in students’ areas
of interest will also be offered. Students
can choose among three tracks (i.e.
Academic; Technical-Vocational-
Livelihood; and Sports and Arts) and
undergo immersion, which provides
relevant exposure and actual experience
in their chosen track.
The Existing Realities in Philippine
Education that became the basis of K
to 12 implementation.

2. Until 2015, Philippines is the only
remaining country in Asia and one of only
three countries worldwide with a 10-year
basic education program (Angola and
Djibouti are the other two).
Note: The recommendation to improve and
to lengthen the short basic education has
been given since 1925.
The following are researches on
Philippine Basic Education Curriculum
and their recommendations:

1. Monroe Survey in 1925 – recommended

training of graduate student in agriculture,
commerce, and industry because secondary
education did not prepare students for life.
2. Education Act in 1953 – proposed to
revise the Primary education system by
adding one year (Grade VII).

3. Philippine EFA 2015 National Action Plan

– gave recommendation to lengthen the
educational cycle by adding two years to
formal basic education (one each for
Primary and high school).
This kind of love never fail
If there are teaching
methods, they will
change;
If there are curricula, they will be revised.
And our teaching is
imperfect,
For our knowledge is imperfect
And we are always
looking for better ways.
