ACRYLIC PLATE

FABRICATION
FUNCTION OF A BASE PLATE

• It acts like vehicle i.e. carries all the components of an appliance.

• It transmits the force.
• It partly helps in retention.
• In some cases it reinforces the anchorage.
• Properly trimmed base plates guide the tooth movement.
• Bite planes can be added.
BASE PLATE MATERIAL

• Polymers/ Polymethacrylate
• Different types on the basis of composition and activation.
• Type I & Type II usually used.
• Type I – Heat cure/ heat processing polymer
• Type II – Cold cure/ auto polymerized polymer
• Powder/ liquid form
COMPOSITION OF POWDER & LIQUID
OF ACRYLIC RESIN
• Powder
1. Polymethylmethacrylate beads
2. Benzoyl peroxide (initiator),
3. Organic dyes, iron or cadmium particles (pigments)
• Liquid
1. Monomer (methyl methacrylate)
2. Crosslinking agent (ethylene glycodimethacrylate)
3. Inhibitor ( hydroquinone)
4. Activator (N.N-dimethyl-p-toulidine)
MANIPULATION OF ACRYLIC RESIN

• Polymerization shrinkage 21%.

• 2.5:1 powder liquid ratio by weight reduce shrinkage till 5-6%.
• Setting stages of material
1. Sandy- immediate.
2. Stringy – sticky mass, after some time.
3. Doughy- tackiness lost, working stage.
4. Hard/ rubbery- formation of plasticine.
REQUIREMENTS

• Cold cure resin power

• Cold cure resin liquid
• Sodium alginate separating medium
• Hydro flask /pressure pot
• Tungsten bur for trimming acrylic
• Polishing lathe
• Pumice
• High gloss polishing compound
