DEFINITION

Refers to the measurement of intellectual accomplishments that are


worthwhile, significant and meaningful.
A form of assessment in which students are asked to perform real-world
tasks that demonstrate meaningful application of essential knowledge and
skills (Mueller, 2011)
REASONS FOR CONDUCTING
AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENTS.

To decide students’ level of learning acquisition.


To decide what to teach and needs to be reviewed.
To report students’ grades and progress.
To monitor students’ performance and achievements and rooms for
improvements.
To monitor our own effectiveness as a teacher.
WHAT IS AUTHENTIC
ASSESSMENTS?

An authentic task for students to perform


A rubric/scoring guide by which the performance on the task will be
evaluated.

EXAMPLES OF AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENTS
TO BE DONE IN CLASSROOM

Reading Project.
- students are given a reading project which allow students to apply the
skills taught in classroom.
- students are given a chance to form a reading group, discussing
stories among themselves.
- Students are given tests on stories they’ve read. Example, write 3
values of the story that they’ve read.

Reading and Listening (Phonics for lower primary students)


Methods:
- do a phonemic discrimination practice with lower primary students.
- ask the students which sound did they hear.
Example: ship / sheep, tree / three, thank / tank

TO BE DONE IN CLASSROOM

Reading and writing assessments. (Rearrange a series of text).


Suitable for lower & upper primary students.
Method:
- choose a story suitable to students’ level.
- pre-teach any new vocabulary words.
- show a picture about the story and ask for students’ view about it.
- discuss answers by eliciting answers from students.
Example : My trip to Zoo Negara. Etc…
CONCLUSION

Authentic assessments are an important part of a classroom.


It is a type of formative assessment, whereby it is an actual assessment for
learning.
Authentic assessments can be used in many ways interactively and suitable
for any subjects taught.
