MASLOW’S HIERARCHY OF

NEEDS

- MEETEILEIMA KHUMUKCHAM
STAGE 1 – PHYSIOLOGICAL NEEDS

• Basic and instinctual needs for survival


• Includes breathing, excretion, hunger, water, sleep, sex and homeostasis
• One must be motivated to satisfy these fundamental needs
• Higher needs won’t be attainable until they achieve these needs
STAGE 2 – NEED FOR SAFETY

• Safety and security is required


• Free from threat of physical/psychological harm
• Includes living in a safe area, financial reserves, job security, good health
• According to Maslow, one can only progress to the next stage if threat is
addressed
STAGE 3 – NEED FOR BELONGINGNESS

• Also called “the social needs"stage


• Needs related to interaction with other fellow human beings
• Includes family, friendship and sexual intimacy
STAGE 4 – NEED FOR
ESTEEM/RESPECT

• Esteem needs can either be internal or external


• Internal : self esteem and value for oneself
• External : Respect and reputation, social status and recognition
STAGE 5 – SELF ACTUALIZATION

• Quest of reaching one’s full potential


• Unlike lower needs, this need is never fully satisfied because people can
continue to grow and change
• Needs include : morality, creativity, spontaneity, problem solving, lack of
prejudice, acceptance of facts, truth, justice and wisdom
