INTRODUCTION

Bricks are mostly used in building constructions.

(Walls, foundation, column, retaining walls)
Bricks are made chiefly from non-organic
materials
Main materials:
- clay
- sand
- lime
- cement

INTRODUCTION
Methods of manufacturing bricks:
- Hand-made
- Pressed
- Wire-cut
Standard size – 215mm (length) x 102.5mm
(width) x 65mm (thickness)
Well-made bricks are hard and durable.

TYPES OF BRICKS
Three types of bricks:
Clay bricks:
1) Common bricks
2) Facing bricks
3) Engineering bricks
4) Fire bricks
Silica bricks/ sand-lime bricks (calcium
silicate)
Cement bricks
Types of Bricks Uses of Bricks in Civil
Engineering

A) Common bricks - Used for internal and

-have a dull texture and rear walls that need to be
poor colour plastered

B) Facing bricks -Used for constructions

-Pleasant looking texture that do not need to be
-Capable of withstanding plastered because of
pleasant appearance
the effects of weather

Engineering

C) Engineering bricks -Mainly used for

-Very hard, dense walls carrying
and do not easily exceptionally heavy
absorb water loads. Examples :
retaining walls ,
foundation
D) Fire bricks -Mainly used for
-Able to resist high constructions that
temperature need to resist high
temperatures like kiln
or boiler

2. Sand-lime bricks/ -As an alternative

silica brick (Calcium for replacing
silicate) ‘Common Clay
Bricks’
-Materials -for internal and
hydrated lime rear walls
Clean sand
ratio of 1:8

3. Cement bricks -As an alternative for

-Materials replacing ‘Common
Clay Bricks’
cement
-for internal and rear
clean sand
walls

Advantages and disadvantages
of Bricks

Advantages Disadvantages
1. Easy to be used in 1. Plastering work requires
building walls skilled workers
2. Easily managed/ handled 2. Low tensile-strength
3. Facing bricks can be
made as decoration
without plastering
4. Can be used as pier
5. Acid or alkaline
resistance
