problems.
• The Philippines has the highest number of
people who have depression in Southeast
Asia.
• The National Statistics Office (NSO)
reports that mental illness is the 3RD most
common form of disability in the country,
after visual and hearing disabilities.

Behaviors that signal distress:
• Displays of anger or blaming others

HEALTH DISORDERS
#1: Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder
(OCD)

●An uncontrollable need to perform repetitive acts;


compulsions are urgent, repeated rituals
●The person may not lead a normal life because
compulsions become so repetitive.
#2: Schizophrenia
• A condition of losing touch with
reality accompanied by reduced ability
to function.
-loses ability to distinguish fantasy from reality
-Some individuals inherit a potential of
developing schizophrenia
-Early psychological trauma : Violence, sexual
abuse, death, divorce, separation, or other
stressors of childhood
#3: Dissociative Identity Disorder
• Two or more separate identities or
personality traits
– Ability to control individual’s behavior and thinking
– Create alters to distance themselves from pain and
trauma
#4: Anxiety
– Someone experiencing anxiety
suffers from severe panic attacks
and fear in high stress events.
#5: Addiction
A physical or psychological craving need for
higher and higher doses of a substance that leads
to bodily harm, social maladjustment, or
economic hardship; dependence on a substance,
habit, or behavior.

#6: Anorexia Nervosa
A disorder in which the irrational fear of
becoming obese results in severe weight loss
from self-imposed starvation.
#7: Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder (PTSD)

Condition that's triggered by a terrifying


event — either experiencing it or witnessing
it. Symptoms may include flashbacks,
nightmares and severe anxiety, as well as
uncontrollable thoughts about the event.
#8: Depression
A clinical condition that is more than just sadness.

Symptoms:
•Withdrawal from family and friends
•Drop in grades/ work performance
•Change in eating & sleeping patterns
•Large weight gain or loss
•Unresolved grief over a loss
•Substance use
•Difficulty concentrating, remembering or making
decision irritability or angry outburst
Suicide
• #1 cause: Depression
• 2nd leading cause of death (15-29 yr. olds)

Warning Signs:
• Giving away prized possessions
• Feelings of despair, hopelessness
• Threats to hurt oneself
• Preoccupation with death
OCCUPATIONAL BALANCE
Occupational Balance
Individual’s perception of having the right
AMOUNT of occupations and the right
VARIATION between Occupations.
Occupational Balance.
Wilcock (2006) defines it as:

“…engagement in occupation that leads to well-


being. For example, the balance may be
among physical, mental and social
occupations; between chosen and obligatory
occupations; between strenuous and restful
occupations, or between doing and being”

- EQUILIBRIUM -
Any meaningful activity a person
may do throughout the course of a
day including taking care of one self
(self-care), contributing to society
through paid and unpaid work
(productivity) and simply enjoying life
(leisure).
Hints for the Organization:
• Ensure a safe working environment
• Make sure that everyone is properly trained for their job.
• Discuss issues and grievances with employees, and take
appropriate action when possible.
• Cut down on the need for overtime by reorganizing duties
or employing extra staff.
• Take into account the personal lives of employees and
recognize that the demands of home will sometimes clash
with the demands of work.
• Seek advice from health professionals, if necessary.
