INTRODUCTION

• Despite sustained economic growth in many developing


countries, poverty remains widespread.
• In 2005, 25 percent, or about 1.4 billion people around the world
lived in poverty. Asia is host to a vast majority of world’s poor

• Alleviation of poverty and minimization of economic


inequality is at the core of all development policies.

• The impact of such differences is more marked in


developing countries where the government faces greater
constraints in its ability to provide much needed assistance
to improve the lot of their poor citizen.
