Design and the Design Process

Preliminary Design Process

LEC 06
The Five-Step Design Process
 Initiation
 Preparation
 Proposal Making
 Evaluation
 Action

 Initiation
 Involves the recognition and definition of the problem to be solved.
 Involves the role of imagination and aspiration
 Architects often directly involves in the early stages of problem identification.
 Identify general problems, educate public, and suggest alternative solutions.
 “Good clients make good buildings”
The Five-Step Design Process
 Preparation
 Includes the systematic collection
and analysis of information about
the problem to be solved.
 Preparation activities include the
gathering of base maps of site and
areal data, legal constrains,
economic and financial data.
 The product of preparation stage
is a list of criteria that describes
the desired characteristics of an
architectural solution.
 Some preparation activities are
integrated into other stages of the
design process. For exl. hospital.
The Five-Step Design Process
 Proposal making
 An informed architect is prepared to
generate ideas and make building proposals.
 Valid idea can come at any time in the design
process but tendency to peek a preconceive
solution is can create unfortunate results.
 Quality of design is proportional to the
length of time given in decision making
 Parallel development of program and
schemes ensures the appropriate interaction
of requirements and design solutions.
 Drawings and notes together form a tool for
successive exploration. A design under study
can be presented to the client to confirm or
revise program intentions.
The Five-Step Design Process
 Evaluation
 Occurs at several scales and includes a
variety of participants.
 Pre-occupancy evaluation
 Post-occupancy evaluation
 Evaluation of proposals involves
comparing proposed design solutions
with the goals and criteria evolved in
the programming stage.
 An appropriate successful proposal
offers the chance to enjoy good
evaluative process in an iterative
fashion with the help of designers
ability to evaluate large number of
issues.
The Five-Step Design Process
 Action
 Stage involves the activities associated with preparing and implementing a
project.
 Readying the construction documents (working drawing, written specification
etc.), acting as the liaison between the owner and contractor.
 Cycles, feedback and iteration among stages.
