Introduction
• Its resistance changes with the light intensity that falls on it.
• This zigzag area separates the metal deposited areas into two
regions.
• Then the ohmic contacts are made on the either sides of the area.
• The resistance of these ohmic contacts should be as less as
possible to make sure that the resistance mainly changes due to the
effect of light only.
• When light falls i.e. when the photons fall on the device, the
electrons in the valence band of the semiconductor material are
excited to the conduction band.
• These photons in the incident light should have energy greater than
the band gap of the semiconductor material to make the electrons
jump from the valence band to the conduction band.
• When light having enough
energy is incident on the
device, more and more
electrons are excited to the
conduction band which results
in large number of charge
carriers.
The structure is housed in a clear plastic or resin case, to provide free access to
external light
When not illuminated, it has very few or no electrons and has high resistance in
range of “megaohms”
When illuminated, the electrons are liberated and conductivity of the material
increases dropping resistance to (<1000 ohms)
Types of Photoresistor
Intrinsic photoresistors
These intrinsic semiconductors have their own charge carriers. These are pure
semiconductor materials such as silicon or germanium.
• These intrinsic semiconductors have their own charge carriers. No free electrons are
present in their conduction band. They contain holes in the valence band
Electrons get excited from valence band to conduction band when photons of
enough energy falls on it and number of charge carriers increases.
• Hence we require higher energy photons to trigger the device. Hence, Intrinsic
photoresistors are designed for higher frequency light detection.
Extrinsic photoresistors.
• These are semiconductor materials doped with impurities which are called
as dopants.
• Hence this reduces the band gap and less energy is required in exciting
them.
• Thus, a little amount of energy can trigger them to jump into the conduction
band.
• Extrinsic photoresistors are used for detecting the longer wavelength and
lower frequency light.
CHARACTERISTICS OF LDR
• LDRs are light dependent devices
• whose resistance decreases when light falls on them and increases
in the dark.
• while it takes seconds for the resistance to rise back again to its
initial value after removal of light.
• If the light intensity is kept constant, the resistance may still vary
significantly due to temperature changes, so they are sensitive to
temperature changes as well.
Working Principle
• It is a passive component.
• When light is incident on the photoresistor, photons get absorbed by the semiconductor
material.
• When these electrons acquire sufficient energy to break the bond, they jump into the
conduction band.
• Due to this, the resistance of the photoresistor decreases. With the decrease in resistance,
conductivity increases.
• Depending upon the type of semiconductor material used for photoresistor, their resistance
range and sensitivity differs.
• In the absence of light, the photoresistor can have resistance values in megaohms. And during
the presence of light, its resistance can decrease to a few hundred ohms
LDR resistance vs light intensity graph
• The most common type of LDR has a resistance that falls with an increase in
the light intensity falling upon the device.
• Small in size
• Low cost
• street lights
• alarm devices
• solar street lamps
• night-lights
• clock radios
• switching devices
• audio application uses such as audio limiters or
compressors.
