Waste Management

Solid Waste
• Waste material that cannot be easily passed through a pipe is solid waste
• Solid waste and its management is a problem in both urban and rural areas

Early Concepts of Waste Disposal
• Early concept of waste disposal was “dilute and disperse”
• Factories were located near rivers- easy disposal of waste into the
river
Dr. Mahmud
Dumps
• Open dumps, the first approach to waste concentration, are
still a common form of waste disposal although they create
a variety of environmental problems.
• Refuse is piled up without being covered or otherwise
protected.
– Dumps have been located wherever land is available without regard
to safety, health hazards, and aesthetic degradation.
– Common sites are abandoned mines and quarries, where gravel and
stone have been removed,
– Natural low areas such as swamps or floodplains and hillside areas
above or below towns.
• Open dumps create a nuisance by providing breeding sites
for the pests, creating a health hazard, polluting the air and
water.

Types of Biodegradation
• Aerobic composting in presence of O2
– Windrow
– Aerated static pile
– In-vessel
• With agitation (dynamic)
• No agitation (plug flow)
• Vermicomposting
• Anaerobic composting/digestion in absence of O2
– Biogas production

Anaerobic Digestion
• Anaerobic biodegradation of organic material
proceeds in the absence of oxygen and the
presence of anaerobic microorganisms.
• It occurs in three stages at temperatures
ranging from 30°C - 65°C:
– Hydrolysis/liquefaction
– Acetogenesis
– Methanogenesis
Dr. Mahmud
Outputs from Anaerobic Digestion
Methane 55-70% by vol.

Incineration
• Burning of refuse in a specially designed facility
Dr. Mahmud
Engineered Sanitary Landfill
• Waste disposal sites that are engineered and monitored to
contain wastes within the site
• Soil layer isolates the waste from birds and rodents and
prevents some infiltration by precipitation
