 Introduction to EIA Draft 2020
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change had issued a
Draft Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) Notification, 2020 which is
going to replace Draft EIA Notification, 2006.The draft has proposed a
new set of rules for various industrial projects. It aims to make the
process of issuing environmental clearances more transparent and
expedient through implementation of an online system. It aims to
further standardize the process of Consultations. EIA is widely
accepted as a tool to ensure sustained development with minimum
environmental degradation.
 Objectives
• Identifying, predicting, and evaluating
economic, environmental, and social impacts of
development activities.
• Providing information on the environmental
consequences for decision making.
• Promoting environmentally sound and suitable
development by identifying appropriate
alternatives and mitigation measures.
 Advantages & Disadvantages
Advantages
• EIA helps the overall
efficiency of the project.
• The more in-depth an EIA
will spot long-term problems
for the project.
• EIA makes a scientific
estimate of the likely impacts
of a project, such as a mine,
irrigation dam, industrial unit
or waste treatment plant.
Disadvantages
• It takes away the voice of affected
communities by exempting
projects like irrigation, widening of
national highways, ropeways,
building constructions and so on
from public participation.
• It also reduces the time allotted to
public participation to expedite the
process.
• The objective of the draft is to be
environmentally friendly but
instead it is pro-industry and anti-
people. 
 Conclusion
The intension of Environmental Impact
Assessment Draft is to simplify the procedure of
clearance for the projects through online
method , showing the transparency of the
project. Although it has been called as a
controversial Draft, because some projects
which must not get clearance might end up
getting the clearance and harm our
Environment.
