The third method of heat transfer

How does Earth get heat There are no particles

energy from the Sun? between the Sun and
the Earth so it CANNOT
travel by conduction or
by convection.

RADIATION
?
Radiation
• Energy of radiation transfers in the form of
electromagnetic waves.
• That doesn’t require any material medium or
transport.
Radiation
• All objects at non zero temperature emits
radiation.
• The hotter the objects more radiations will be
emitted.
Examples of Radiation
• Ultraviolet light from
the sun.
• Heat from a stove
burner.
• Microwaves from a
microwave oven
• A camp fire
Applications of Radiation
• Four containers were filled with warm water. Which
container would have the warmest water after ten
minutes?
Dull metal Shiny black

Shiny metal Dull black

• The Shiny metal containers’ water would be the warmest
after ten minutes. Because, its’ shiny surface reflects heat
radiation back into the container. So, less is lost.
• The Dull black containers’ water would be the coolest.
Because, it is the best at emitting heat radiation.
