Water Shortage in

Gaza, Palestine
Brief History of Palestine

One upon a time…

 For many centuries there was no such conflict!

UNTIL THE 1900’S, Palestine was inhibited by
a multicultural populating of : 86% Muslims, 10%
Christians, 4% Jewish people. ALL living together
IN PEACE.
AND THEN….
Effects

This brought upon the Palestinians not only WAR but also a problem even worse…

THE WATER CRISIS!

If Palestine has tons of water naturally, then the question is: WHY WOULD THEY
HAVE A SHORTAGE??

The Problem:

 According to the Israeli-Palestine water agreement, the aquifers and dams

are to be used equally between the two states

 Unfortunately, , Israel being the superior state has put them into deep
trouble by PRIVITIZING, CONTAMINATING and OVEREXPLOITING the
limited available water.

 Palestine: 70 litres a day per capita

 Israel: 300 litres per capita

Two people form the same region of the world are getting
unequal treatment, which is totally discriminating and
inhumane.
ISRAEL
PALESTINE
What is their source of water?

 Coastal aquifers on the mountains are the ONLY SOURCE OF

WATER for Palestinians.

 Although, Israel has many other sources, they still steal from the
Palestinians by creating water stations all around Gaza by diverting the
water to their way before it reaches Gaza.

Majid Ghannam, quality manager at coastal municipalities’ water

utility reported that, “The aquifer is recharged by rainwater every
year adding 50 to 60 million cubic meters, but our consumption is
more than 150 cubic meters per year.
 Although Palestine has a much larger population, Israel uses the
same or more water then what the Palestinians should be consuming.
Although, Palestine has a portion of the aquifer's water for
survival, even the water from the aquifers are contaminated.

Why?
 result of the restriction that Israel put on the entry of materials
and equipments necessary for the development of infrastructure in
Gaza.

 Majid Ghannam also reports, “The shortage of water is due to

Israeli wells dug all around the Gaza strip borders. The Israeli
have been pumping stations all around the Gaza sip diverting
water before it reaches the aquifer for Gaza. The flow of fresh
water is coming from regions under Israeli control.”
Negative effects:

 Due to lack of water, the Gaza residents are forced in to

purchasing water form mobile water tankers, at high prices
and often of very poor quality.
 Poor water conditions are negatively affecting the quality of
life for the local residents which are create a lot of health
problems and risks for the Gaza residents.

Doctor Nasser Al-yazji reports that, “There are great

numbers of residents who have diseases such as kidney
failure and blood poisoning, general weakness and
yellowing of the teeth that are caused by the high salinity.”
