PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
SELF
 In Psychological terms, the Self is defined as the cognitive
and affective representation of one’s identity, or the subject
of experience.
 A person’s identity is defined by his or her thoughts and
feelings as well as experiences.
 The Self then is defined in terms of human characteristics
such as behavior and thought.
 This being the case, when we refer to the Self, this can be
described in terms of personality.
PERSONALITY
 Personality refers to the unique and relatively enduring set
of behaviors, feelings, thoughts, and motives that
characterize an individual (Feist and Rosenberg 2012)
 Two key components of personality
The UNIQUENESS of an individual’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior; and
their RELATIVELY ENDURING, or being consistent, over different situations and
over time.
PERSONALITY
 The personality of a person can be developed by nature and nurture.
NATURE
The biological factors that makes the human being influences how his personality.
When we say biological factors, we refer to the genes which a man inherits from
his parents.

NURTURE
Refers to the social environment of a person which influences him through the
process of socialization.
TRAIT THEORY
The Trait Theory that is being referred
to by many today is the Five-Factor
Model, which involves five dimensions Extraversion
or tendencies;
• sociable, talkative, active, outgoing, and
fun-loving

Openness to experience Agreeableness


• curiosity, interest, imagination, and creativity
• friendly, warm, trusting, generous, and
to new ideas
kind-hearted
Conscientiousness
Neuroticism
• planning, organizing, hardworking,
controlling, persevering, and punctuality • calm, relaxed, and comfortable
