What isis FACTS?
FACTS?
What is FACTS?
• Flexible AC Transmission System is a new integrated concept based
on power electronic switching converters and dynamic controllers to
enhance the system utilization and power transfer capacity as well as
the stability, reliability and power quality of AC system
interconnections.
• FACTS uses solid state switching devices to control power flow
through a transmission network, So that the transmission network is
loaded to its full capacity.
Basic Types Of FACTS Controllers
• SVC combination of fixed capacitor C and a
thyristor-controlled reactor (TCR)
Static VAR Compensator(SVC)
• Static Var compensator (SVC) is a type of FACTS device,
used for shunt compensation to maintain bus voltage
magnitude. SVC regulates bus voltage to compensate
continuously the change of reactive power loading.

• The thyristor valves are fired symmetrically in an
angle α, ranging from 90° to 180°.
• The V-I Characteristics of the SVC
Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor(TCSC)
• Static Var compensator (SVC) is a type of FACTS device,
used for shunt compensation to maintain bus voltage
magnitude. SVC regulates bus voltage to compensate
continuously the change of reactive power loading.

• The thyristor valves are fired symmetrically in an
angle α, ranging from 90° to 180°.
• TCSC basic scheme using fixed capacitor C
and a thyristor-controlled reactor (TCR)
Firing Angle (α )

• Relationship Between Firing Angle (α ) and XTCSC

• IEEE 14 BUS TEST SYSTEM
• Compensation using TCSC
Application of TCSC
• 1. Accurately regulating the power flow on a
transmission line
• 2. Damping inter area power oscillations,
• 3. Mitigating subsynchronous resonance (SSR)
• 4. Improving transient stability
