1 Neuroscience (or neurobiology) is the
scientific study of the nervous system -  how
the nervous system develops, its structure,
and what it does.
The major branches
of modern
neuroscience
1. Behavioral neuroscience – the study of the biological bases of
behavior. Looking at how the brain affects behavior.

2. Cellular neuroscience – the study of neurons, including their

form and physiological properties at cellular level.

3. Clinical neuroscience – looks at the disorders of the nervous

system

4. Cognitive neuroscience - cognitive neuroscientists can take two

broad directions - behavioral/experimental or
computational/modeling

5. Computational neuroscience -attempting to understand how

brains compute, using computers to simulate and model brain
functions.

Neuroscientists have resorted to robots for testing
hypotheses and validating models of biological
nervous systems.

I am going to refer to two articles:
1. Potential of robots as next-generation technology for clinical
assessment of neurological disorders and upper-limb therapy

2. Robot-Assisted Therapy in Upper Extremity Hemiparesis:

Overview of an Evidence-Based Approach
UPPER LIMB
AFTER STROKE
Every year, 17 million people worldwide suffer
a stoke.

One of the most common place which is

affected by stroke is upper – limb. Usually
affecting only one side of the body

After stroke a person may feel:

• Weakness
• Coordination problems
• Changes in the muscles

METHOD
S OF
05 Robot– mediated therapy is an
innovative form of rehabilitation. It has
been an innovative approach to address
the need of repetitive rehabilitation

ANALYSI regimens.

S
In sixteen robot – assisted, 45 – minute sessions (4-days per week), study found that
severely impaired patients performed an average of 734 movements per session.
Moreover the number of reaching movements accomplished per session increased from
590 to 871 movements.

Research findings and conclusion

Robotic assisted upper – limb therapy could be a great

solution to treating patients way faster and easier.

Compared to the previous therapies post – stroke patient

were able to do less than 32 movements per session, robot
assisted therapy lead to around 800 movements.

While using robotics, hospital

noticed that there was 20%
improvement in productivity, that
way there are more patients who
can be treated.

Robotic rehabilitation therapy can deliver high-dosage and high-intensity
training, making it useful for patients with motor disorders caused by stroke.
Robot-assisted therapy for stroke rehabilitation is in a dynamic phase of
development and has achieved remarkable advances.
