INTRODUCTION
• Developed by psychologist, Carl Rogers.
• Has a positive and optimistic view of human nature.
• The Person-centered Therapy (PCT) has a humanistic
orientation which focus on phenomenology and the role of
the self in psychology functioning.

BASIC ASSUMPTION
• Human beings are intrinsically good and trustworthy.
• Human beings are growth oriented and toward self-
actualization.
• Clients can be trusted to establish their own goals and
monitor their progress toward these goals.

CORE CONDITION OF
PERSON-CENTERED THERAPY
• There are three core conditions for personal growth to occur:

Unconditional
Counselor Empathic
positive
congruence understanding

I) COUNSELOR CONGRUENCE
• Congruence is referred as authenticity.
• Counselor must real and honest.
• Counselors are congruent in terms of what they are
experiencing and what they communicate.

(Flanagan & Flanagan, 2004)


II) EMPATHIC UNDERSTANDING
• Empathy is the ability to understand what the client is
feeling, thinking and experiencing.
• communicating understanding to the client.
III) UNCONDITIONAL POSITIVE REGARD

• The counselor accept and respect the client.


• The counselor should accept the client as a person worthy
of respect even though the client’s behavior may be
inappropriate.
• If the counselor can accept client completely, than the
client can begin exploring who they really are and what
they really want (Flanagan & Flanagan, 2004).

• Rogers focused on counseling relationship rather than use of
techniques.
• Rogers used listening skills to communicate emphatic
understanding and help the clients to explore their inner choices.

• It may overemphasize on the importance of relationship

• It may discount significance of client’s past.
