GOOD MORNING

FRICTION
• Friction is the force that opposes the motion
of an object.

> It slows things down or prevents it

from moving.
> It always acts in a direction opposite
to that of the motion.
PROPERITIES OF FRICTION
• It always opposes motion.
• It produces heat.
• Always acts in opposite direction of motion
CAUSE

• Friction is caused by the irregularities on the

two surfaces in contact.
FACTORS AFFECTING FRICTION
• Nature of the Surface.
• Mass of an Object.
TYPES OF FRICTION
• Static
• Sliding …slightly smaller than static friction.
• Rolling ….rolling reduces friction.
FLUID FRICTION
• Fluids (liquids and gases) exert force of friction
on all objects moving through them.

This frictional force exerted by fluids is

called drag.
. Drag depends upon……….
Shape , Material and the Speed of an object.
• Fluid friction is minimum for the object that are narrow
in front and broad at the back.

• This shape is called streamlined shape.

• Streamlining reduces drag enabling the object to pass

through easily.

• Examples:-
• > Boats and Ships
• > Automobiles & Aeroplanes etc.
ADVANTAGES OF FRICTION
• Helps us to walk.
• Treaded tyres helps to move vehicle safely.
• Slows/stps a moving vehicle.
• Helps in writing on paper and board.
• Lighting a matchsticks, sewing a clothes,
tying a knot or fixing a nail.
DISADVANTAGES
> Wears out the rubbing surfaces.

(Soles of shoes, screw, ball bearing etc.)

> Wastage of energy (as more force is required
to overcome the friction)
> heat generation causes damage to machine
parts.
INCREASING FRICTION
Different methods are used:-
• Roughen the surfaces.
• Dry the surface.
• Use brake pads.
REDUCING FRICTION
• Polishing the surface.
• Lubricating the surface.
• Using wheels and ball bearings.
• Streamlining.
