oxygen + glucose carbon dioxide + water

3. Describe the three main uses of the energy transferred in your

body during aerobic respiration (3)
Much of the energy transferred in respiration is used to
synthesise other molecules, such as carbohydrates, proteins and fats. This
energy can also be used to break down larger molecules into smaller
ones. Energy is needed for movement, respiration release energy the
muscles for contraction. Mammals and birds also require energy to
maintain a constant internal body temperature.

4. Plants also carry out aerobic respiration. How do plants use the
energy released during aerobic respiration? (2)
Plants use energy from respiration in active transport to move
mineral ions, such as nitrates, from the soil into root hair cells. It is also
needed to convert sugar, nitrates and other nutrients into amino acids
which then are used to build proteins.
5. What is glycogen? Why is it important the glycogen is stored in
muscle cells? (3)

Glycogen is a long-chain polymer made up of glucose molecules, it is

used to store energy in the muscles. Glycogen is primarily found in
muscles as it can be converted rapidly back into glucose to be used in
aerobic respiration to transfer the energy needed to make your
muscles contract.

6. During exercise, when muscular activity increases, several

changes take place in the body. Explain these changes. (6)
During exercise your heart rate increases to increase the amount of
oxygenated blood reaching your muscles. This increases the amount
of oxygen and glucose needed for respiration to take place. Your
breathing rate will increase in order to bring more air into your lungs. This
increases the rate at which oxygen is absorbed into your bloodstream
and carbon dioxide is released back into the environment. More
oxygen available means a higher rate of respiration. Glycogen stored in
muscles will be broken down into glucose more quickly. All three of
these points increases the rate of respiration which increase the rate
at which energy is supplied to muscles for contraction to take place.

Grading: I will work out a percentage for the students work and award
grades based on the following percentage boundaries:

• 80% - 9
• 75% - 8
R/A/G: If they have achieved their target
• 70% - 7 grade or above they receive a GREEN. If they
• 65% - 6
have received one below their target grade
• 60% - 5
then I award an AMBER. If they achieve
• 50% - 4
more than one grade below their target
• 40% - 3
grade they receive a RED.
• 35% - 2
• 30% - 1
