information system and types of

information systems
ENGR. NUZHAT MADINA
What is the purpose of information
systems
Information systems are basically implemented in
organization or institutions for the purpose of
improving the efficiency and effectiveness of that
organization in terms of performances. Information
systems is a combination of software, hardware,
infrastructure and skilled personnel organized to aid
planning, control, coordination, and decision making
within an organization.
What are the different types of Information
systems?
The different types of information systems are:
DATA WAREHOUSES: (In computing, a data
warehouse (DW or DWH), also known as an enterprise data
warehouse (EDW), is a system used for reporting and
data analysis, and is considered a core component. They store
current and historical data and are used for creating analytical
reports for knowledge workers throughout the enterprise.
Examples of reports could range from annual and quarterly
comparisons and trends to detailed daily sales analysis.)
Types of Information Systems
ENTERPRISE RESOURCE PLANNING:
(Enterprise resource planning (ERP) is business process
management software that allows an organization to use a
system of integrated applications to manage the business and
automate many back office functions related to technology,
services and human resources. ERP software integrates all
facets of an operation )
ENTERPRISE SYSTEMS: (Enterprise systems (ES) are large-scale
application software packages that support business processes,
information flows, reporting, and data analytics in complex
organizations.)
Types of Information Systems
EXPERT SYSTEMS: (In artificial intelligence, an expert system is a
computer system that emulates the decision-making ability of a human
expert. Expert systems are designed to solve complex problems by
reasoning about knowledge, represented mainly as if–then rules rather
than through conventional procedural code.)
SEARCH ENGINES: (Search engines are programs that search
documents for specified keywords and returns a list of the documents
where the keywords were found. A search engine is really a general
class of programs, however, the term is often used to specifically
describe systems like Google, Bing and Yahoo! Search that enable users
to search for documents on the World Wide Web.)
Types of Information Systems
GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM: (A geographic information
system (GIS) is a computer system for capturing, storing, checking,
and displaying data related to positions on Earth’s surface. GIS can
show many different kinds of data on one map. This enables people to
more easily see, analyze, and understand patterns and relationships.
With GIS technology, people can compare the locations of different
things in order to discover how they relate to each other. For example,
using GIS, the same map could include sites that produce pollution,
such as gas stations, and sites that are sensitive to pollution, such
as wetlands. Such a map would help people determine which
wetlands are most at risk.)
Types of Information Systems
GLOBAL INFORMATION SYSTEM: A global information system (GIS) is
an information system which is developed and / or used in a global
context. A global information system (GIS) is any information system
which attempts to deliver the totality of measurable data worldwide
within a defined context.)
OFFICE AUTOMATION: (Office automation refers to the varied
computer machinery and software used to digitally create, collect,
store, manipulate, and relay office information needed for
accomplishing basic tasks. Raw data storage, electronic transfer, and
the management of electronic business information comprise the
basic activities of an office automation system. Office automation
helps in optimizing or automating existing office procedures.
Explain Office Automation System?
Office automation refers to the use of computer and software to digitally create,
collect, store, manipulate, and relay office information needed for accomplishing
basic tasks and goals.
The use of computer systems to do a variety of office operations, such as word
processing, accounting, and e-mail. Raw data storage, electronic transfer, and the
management of electronic business information comprise the basic activities of
an office automation system.
Office automation helps in optimizing or automating existing office procedures.
The backbone of office automation is a LAN, which allows users to transmit data,
mail and even voice across the network. All office functions, including dictation,
typing, filing, copying, fax, Telex, microfilm and records management, telephone
and telephone switchboard operations, fall into this category
Components of Office Automation System:
Microsoft Word provides everything to produce professional-
looking documents, communicate your ideas, and share
information with others.
Microsoft Excel makes it easy to build spreadsheets and then
use, share, and analyze the data, as well as provide reports and
present the data graphically.
Microsoft PowerPoint allows you to organize, illustrate, and
present your ideas in a multimedia presentation. It gives you
the tools to communicate with impact, whether in the
classroom, to parents, or to colleagues.
Components of Office Automation
System:
Microsoft Access lets you develop and use
databases to store, manipulate, and share
information. Microsoft Access is a database
management system that serves as an electronic
filing system. With Microsoft Access, the user is
easily able to modify any data within the database,
produce reports from the database and submit
queries about all information stored into it.
