PARALLEL LINES

Parallel lines are lines on the Cartesian plane

(coplanar) that do not intersect.
PERPENDICULAR LINES

Perpendicular lines are lines on the Cartesian plane that

intersect to form four right angles.
How do we determine whether the lines are parallel or
perpendicular?

To determine whether the lines are parallel, we get their slopes.

If the slopes of the lines are equal, then they are parallel. In symbols

m1  m2 .
How do we determine whether the lines are parallel or
perpendicular?

To determine whether the lines are perpendicular,

we get their slopes. If the slopes of the lines are negative
reciprocals of each other or their product is – 1, then they
are perpendicular. In symbols

m1m2  1.
EXAMPLE 1:
Determine whether the lines are parallel, perpendicular or neither:

2x  3y  7
4x  6 y  9
EXAMPLE 2:
Determine whether the lines are parallel, perpendicular or neither:

4x  5 y  3
15 x  12 y  8
EXAMPLE 3:
Determine whether the lines are parallel, perpendicular or neither:

2x  y  6
3x  2 y  5
EXAMPLE 4:
Determine whether the lines are parallel, perpendicular or neither:

2x – 3y =4
EXAMPLE 5:
Determine whether the lines are parallel, perpendicular or neither:

5x+4=3y
10x+4=6y
