BACKGROUND
• The numbers laboratory workers who have potentially exposured to numerous
hazard ( chemical, biological, physical, radioactives, stress, muscosceletal
disorders ). ( 1 )
• Protection of quality indoor air, because people spend a substansial proportion
of their time in building. Thi is for health concern. ( 2 )
• Preventing health risks of environmental exposures as well as specialists and
authorities to involved in the design and use of buildings, indoor materials and
products. ( 2 )

Reference :
1. OSHA ( Occupational Safety and Health Administration ), U.S Department of Labor
2. WHO Guideline for Indoor Air Quality
ANALYSIS SITUATION
• Limitation space work, the numbers of human
resources, instrument facilities, knowledge.
• The standard is less, mainly at middle – low class.
• Poor secure of safety from exposure.

CHEMICAL EXPOSURE & PREVENTION
• Hazardous chemicals present physical and/or health threats to workers in
clinical, industrial, and academic laboratories.
• Identification of hazard, each laboratory must identify which hazardous
chemicals will be encountered by its workers. Employers must have an MSDS in
the workplace for each hazardous chemical in use, MSDSs are written or printed
materials concerning a hazardous chemical

MSDS sheets must contain:

1. Name of the chemical;
2. Manufacturer’s information;
3. Hazardous ingredients/identity information;
4. Physical/chemical characteristics;
5. Fire and explosion hazard data;
6. Reactivity data;
7. Health hazard data;
8. Precautions for safe handling and use;
9. Control measures
CHEMICAL EXPOSURE & PREVENTION
CHEMICAL EXPOSURE & PREVENTION
• The Air Contaminants standard provides rules for protecting workers from
airborne exposure to over 400 chemicals. Several of these chemicals are
commonly used in laboratories and include: toluene,xylene, and acrylamide.
Toluene and xylene are solvents used to fix tissue specimens and rinse stains.
They are primarily found in histology, hematology,microbiology and cytology
laboratories.
REFERENCE
SUMMARY
• Minimizing exposure to chemicals by establishing standard operating
procedures, requirements for personal protective equipment, engineering
controls (e.g., chemical fume hoods, air handlers, etc.) and waste disposal
procedures.
• For some chemicals, the work environment must be monitored for levels that
require action or medical attention.
• Procedures to obtain free medical care for work-related exposures must be
stated. The means to administer the plan must be specified.
• Responsible persons must be designated for procurement and handling of
Material Safety Data Sheets, organizing training sessions, monitoring employee
work practices, and annual revision of the Chemical Hygiene Plan.
