Personal Entrepreneurial
Competencies

After going through this module, you are expected to:

✖ Be familiar with the different entrepreneurial competencies of a
programmer.

achievement and power cluster.
✖ Create an infomercial on computer programmers’ competencies in any of
the following form.
○ PowerPoint Presentation
○ Video Clip

Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies (PEC)

✖ It is the personal characteristics of an individual that
enables him to perform the task effectively and
efficiently. Some of these competencies are innate
while others are acquired in the process of learning and
training and development.
7

✖ As the definition of PEC was given above, how about its

root word, entrepreneur? What is an entrepreneur?

ORGANIZE,
ENTREPRENEUR is the one who

MANAGES,

ASSUMES the risk of a business

or enterprise.
8

✖ As an entrepreneur you must be COMPETENT. The

table below shows the summary of the entrepreneurial
competencies and grouped into three different clusters.
9

ACHIEVEMENT
1. Opportunity Seeking
Entrepreneurs are innovative opportunity seekers.
They have endless curiosity to discover new or different
ideas and see whether these ideas will work in the
marketplace.

This is what separates entrepreneurs from the

ordinary businessman whose main objective is simply to
earn profits from producing, buying, and selling goods.
10

2. Persistence
An entrepreneur is able to make repeated efforts or to
take different actions.
3. Commitment to work
An entrepreneur places the highest priority on getting
a job completed. They make personal sacrifice or take
extraordinary effort to complete a job. They accept full
responsibility for problems in completing a job for others
and express concern for satisfying the customer.
11

4. Risk – taking
Means taking the chances to do something which is
out of you comfort zone. Successful entrepreneurship
involves taking risks. If you don’t embrace risk-taking, you
may want to rethink being a business owner. Taking risks
in entrepreneurship involves careful planning and hard
work.
5. Demand the Efficiency and Quality
A successful entrepreneur always finds ways to do
things with fewer resources or at a lower cost. They look to
find ways to do things faster or at less cost.
12

PLANNING
1. Goal Setting
Entrepreneurs set goals to clearly lay out activities and
task to attain identified objectives. The said goals will
serve as guide for detailed plans to carry out different task
on achieving settled goals. A business without a goal is like
a person who lost himself in a journey without direction.
2. Information Seeking
An entrepreneur can take action on how to seek
information to help achieve business objectives or clarify
business problems. They do personal research on how to
provide a product or service. They seek information or ask
questions to clarify what is wanted or needed.
13

3. Systematic Planning and Monitoring

An entrepreneur develops and uses logical, step-by-
step to reach goals. They plan by breaking a large task into
subtask and develop plans, then anticipate obstacles and
evaluate alternatives. They take a logical and systematic
approach to activities.
Entrepreneur normally monitor or supervise all of the
activities to ensure that the work is completed by
maintaining good quality.
14

4. Problem Solving
Entrepreneurs identify new and potentially unique
ideas to achieve his goals. They generate new ideas or
innovative solutions to solve problems and they take
alternative strategies to solve the said problems.

15

POWER
1. Persuasion
Entrepreneurs with this competency successfully
encourage others to pursue and perform the activities
effectively and efficiently. An entrepreneur can persuade
or influence others for mobilizing resources, obtaining
inputs, organizing productions and selling his products or
services.
2. Self Confidence

abilities. They express confidence in their own ability to
complete a task or meet a challenge. They stick to their
own judgment while taking decision.
16

3. Assertiveness

issues with others directly. They demand
recognitions and disciplines those failing to
perform as expected. They assert own
competence, reliability or other personal
company’s qualities.

Lesson 2 –
Technical and
Behavioral
Competencies of a
Programmer
19

After going through this lesson, you are expected to:

✖ Be familiar with the different technical and behavioral
competencies of a programmer.

✖ Describe the different technical and behavioral

competencies of a programmer.

✖ Create a graphic organizer of list of activities you will

carry out to be technically and behaviorally competent
as a programmer.
20

Technical Competencies
A set of competencies that refer to the standard skills a
programmer should possess in order to perform and
deliver his services effectively and efficiently.
✖  Programming
refers to knowledge and application of fundamentals
components of programming.
✖  Software Development
It is the process of conceiving, specifying, designing,
programming, documenting, testing, and bug fixing
involved in creating and maintaining applications
21

continuation…….
✖ Business Analysis
It pertains to the knowledge and skill in identifying
business needs and solutions to address such needs.
Companies are not only looking for programmers who
write good code.
Producing better results for clients builds business
value and makes customers happy is just as important and
deep experience in any given programming technology.
22

continuation…….
✖ Data/Information Security
The primary aim of data security is to protect the data
that an organization collects, stores, creates, receives or
transmits. Compliance is also a major consideration. It
doesn't matter which device, technology or process is used
to manage, store or collect data; it must be protected. Data
breaches can result in litigation cases and huge fines, not
to mention the damage to an organization's reputation.
The importance of shielding data from security threats is
more important today than it has ever been.
Therefore, as a programmer, it is necessary that you
produce or develop software that will not compromise data
and information.
23

continuation…….
✖ Identifying platform and emerging technology.
When a product is designed or developed it is expected
to run on multiple platforms like Windows, Mac, Linux,
etc. In a simple language cross platform allows you to write
code once and that is shared across different platforms.
It is important for a developer to make a product
which can be accepted by the maximum number of
systems because today most of the users are switching to
the mobile devices or smartphones to use the product or
services.
24

Behavioral Competencies
General competencies or characteristics to establish a
well-balanced professional attitude.
✖ Analytical Thinker

✖ Client Focused
Sensitive to clients’ needs. The orientation of an
organization toward serving its clients' needs. Having a
customer focus is usually a strong contributor to the
overall success of a business and involves ensuring that
all aspects of the company put its priority in customers'
satisfaction.
25
continuation…….
✖ Good Communicator
Communicate well at any level of communication.
From layman’s standpoint to a technical standpoint. A
good programmer can make his clients understand from
explaining solutions down to product demonstrations and
instructions.
✖  Continuous Learner
Continuous learner constantly expands skill development
and skillsets through learning and increasing knowledge.
Learning new skills and knowledge should not stop most
especially for programmers because technology kept on
innovating and improving. One should be able to learn and
adapt to different domains to create and deliver his
services.
26

continuation…….
✖ Results Oriented
Result oriented is a term used to describe an
individual or organization that focuses on outcome rather
than process used to produce a product or deliver a
service. As such, several processes are used where the most
effective and economical process is identified.
As a programmer you must meet commitments and
services on time, produce working and good quality
results.
27

continuation…….
✖ Team Player
Good team players are willing to deal with all kinds of
problems in a solutions-oriented manner. Work with a
team and collaborate. Prefers to be proactive and not
passive.
