Metals

and
Non-metals
Properties of Metals

1. Luster
means
they are
shiny.
Properties of Metals
2. Ductile
metals can
be drawn
into wire.
Properties of Metals
3. Malleable
metals can
be hammered
into sheets
Properties of Metals

4. Metals have a high melting point and

boiling point. They are also very dense.
Properties of Metals
5. Conductor
Metals allow
electricity and
heat to move
through it.
Properties of Metals
6. Reacts with
water and oxygen.
This results in
corrosion and
rust.
Summary
Metals are ….
 solids (except mercury).
 hard (except sodium, potassium, mercury,
cesium, rubidium and lithium.)
 malleable.
 ductile.
 good conductors of heat and electricity.
Metals have ….
 metallic luster.
 high melting points and boiling points.
Properties of Non-metals

1. Nonmetals
do not have
luster; they
are dull.
Properties of Non-metals
2. Nonmetals are
brittle so they
break easily.
This means
nonmetals ARE
NOT ductile or
malleable.
Properties of Non-metals

3. Nonmetals
have low
density.
Properties of Non-metals
4. They also have
a low boiling
and melting
point. They are
poor
conductors of
heat and
electricity.
Summary
Non-metals….
 may be solids, liquids or gases.
 which are solids are brittle (except
diamond, the hardest mineral).
 are dull.
 have low melting and boiling points
 are not malleable.
 are not ductile.
 bad conductors of heat and electricity
(except graphite).
Preventing
Corrosion
and Rust
Corrosion and Rust
 The surface of some metals gets
corroded or get rust when exposed
to moist air and water for a long
time. Some of our properties such
as bike may get affected by
corrosion and rust.

Give ways on how to

prevent corrosion .
The corrosion and
rusting of metals can be
prevented by:
Cleaning our tools or equipment and
drying it with cloth.
Applying oil or grease
Applying paint
