Tilak Mehta, a 13-year-old student, came up with the idea for Papers N Parcels after forgetting books at his uncle's place. He realized there was a need for same-day delivery services. With help from his father and others, he launched Papers N Parcels, which uses Dabbawallas and couriers to deliver parcels within 4-8 hours in Mumbai for Rs. 40-180. After successful beta testing and a soft launch, the service was formally launched in July 2018 and now delivers 1000-1200 parcels daily. Future plans include expanding nationwide and providing pan-India employment.

Tilak Mehta, a 13 year old 8th grade student from
Garodia International School, Mumbai once forgot some books at his uncle’s place which he had to read for his school test, scheduled on the next day. He called his uncle to get his books but his uncle couldn’t send them the same day. So, he wished there was a service which could get his books the same day. While he was thinking this, he came across a Mumbai Dabbawala in his building and the idea for PAPERS N PARCELS struck and his entrepreneurial journey began. THE NEW BEGINNINGS TILAK PRESENTS THE IDEA TO HIS FATHER MR. VISHAL MEHTA, WHO WAS QUICKLY CONVINCED THAT THIS IDEA NEEDS TO BE PURSUED. HIS FATHER WAS THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF A LOGISTICS COMPANY AND COULD HAVE HELPED. BUT HE WENT THROUGH THE GRIND, CONDUCTING THE MARKET RESEARCH OF THE CONCEPT HIMSELF. HE FOUND THAT APPROXIMATELY 5 LAKH PARCELS ARE DELIVERED EVERYDAY WITHIN MUMBAI, THERE ARE AROUND 5000 DABBAWALLAS IN THE CITY DELIVERING FOOD AND THAT THERE ARE MULTIPLE SERVICE PROVIDERS IN THE COURIER INDUSTRY IN THE CITY. HOW THE IDEA PROCEEDED INITIALLY So, the idea was to bring all these service providers together and provide logistics to digitize the service in line with present technological revolution going around in the world. Since he didn’t know coding/writing programmes, he hired an engineer to build an app and named it Papers N Parcels. During his school vacations, Tilak spent 15 days with the Mumbai Dabbawallas understanding their network, routine and how they function. Since dabbawallas function around an old concept, Tilak was skeptical that they might not be comfortable with technology. However, to his surprise, when he discussed the app and its technology with them, they were excited to be a part of the process. They were open minded and ready to adapt. INITIAL FUNDING AND TEAM FORMATION o INITIAL FUNDING COMES FROM HIS FAMILY ONLY, WHICH HE PLANNED TO PAY BACK ONCE THEIR BUSINESS BECAME PROFITABLE. HOWEVER, HE PLANNED TO EXPLORE THE AVENUE OF EXTERNAL FUNDING FOR THE NEXT STAGE. o GHANSHYAM PAREKH, HIS UNCLE AND A BANKER, WITH A STRONG BACKGROUND IN FINANCE WAS APPOINTED AS THE COMPANY CEO, VAISHALI NANDU AS PROJECT COORDINATOR AND JIGNESH BRAHMKHATRI, WHO HAD YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN MOBILE AND WEB BASED INNOVATION, AS CTO. o 500 PEOPLE INCLUDING 300 DABBAWALLAS WERE EMPLOYED AND THE BETA TESTING BEGAN IN JANUARY 2018. THE IDEA TAKES FLIGHT After successful beta testing, a soft launch was done in May 2018 to ensure that everything worked fine. After 2 months of soft launch, the service was formally launched in July 2018. The whole Mumbai was divided into 63 circles for efficient operations. They pick up from end customers, which no courier did till that time and provided 4-8 hours delivery, with parcels picked up upto 2:30 pm and all this at the minimum price of Rs. 40-180, depending upon the parcel’s weight (upto 3 kg). Within a short span of time, they registered 10000 users including large corporates, seeing a daily volume of 1000 to 1200 requests, which they gradually planned to expand to 2000-5000 requests in next 6 months. WORKING OF THE SERVICE FUTURE PLANS REACHING INR 100 CRORES REVENUES BY 2020, WHICH IS 20% MARKET SHARE OF THE INTRA MU MBAI LOGISTICS MARKET. EXPANDING TO ALL METROS OF THE COUNTRY AND GRADUALLY EXPANDING THE NETWORK THROUGHOUT THE LENGTH AND BREADTH OF THE COUNTRY. PROVIDING PAN INDIA EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES. THANK YOU !
