RECORD LABELS

Record labels aim to get information about artists and new releases out
to their target audiences, both established fans and new fan bases, to
achieve maximum product sales of music releases, concert tickets and
merchandise. The music industry uses music magazines to promote and
market performers. Some of these magazines may be for specific
subgenres of music such as heavy metal. A niche audience magazine like
Kerrang! could be used to promote and market a heavy metal band.
DEF JAM RECORDS
• Def Jam Recordings is an American record
label focused predominantly on hip hop, pop,
and urban music, owned by Universal Music
Group. In the UK, the label takes on the name
Def Jam UK and is operated through Virgin
EMI Records, while in Japan, it is known as
Def Jam Japan, operating through Universal
Music Japan. The label distributes releases of
various record labels, including Kanye West's
GOOD Music, and Listen Up Forever Records,
headed by producer, Ronny J. Current artists
include Justin Bieber, Logic, Big Sean, Kanye
West, Nas, 2 Chainz, YG and Nasty C.
XL RECORDINGS
• XL recordings is a British independent
record label launched in 1989 to release
rave and dance music. It was founded by
Tim Palmer and Nick Halkes. Although
only releasing an average of six albums a
year, XL has worked with Adele, Dizzee
Rascal, The Horrors, The Prodigy,
Radiohead, Tyler, the Creator, Vampire
Weekend and the The White Stripes.
• This would be a good record label to use
for my coursework due to indie music
identifying their genre as independent
and many bands in the indie /rock genre
have worked with them.
