Instrumentation and Controls

Sure Solutions
What is Instrumentation?
• Instrumentation is defined as the art and science
of measurement and control of process variables
within a production or manufacturing area
• An instrument is a device that measures a
physical quantity such as flow, temperature, level,
distance, angle, or pressure. Instruments may be
as simple as direct reading thermometers or may
be complex multi-variable process analyzers
Why Instrumentation

• To know quantity of Physical, Chemical changes.

• To convert these changes to understandable variable.
• To control these changes to obtain desirable results.
What You Can measure

• Branch of which measures quantity of physical or chemical change like

• Temperature
• Pressure
• Level
• Flow
• Weight
• Time
• Distance
• Displacement
• Event
• Resistance
• Inductance
• Capacitance
• PH
• Conductivity
• Ionization
• TDS
• Force
• Surface hardness
• Brightness
How You Can measure

• Convert non visible change to Resistance, Electrical volt or current

like
1. Load cell ( Stress/strain to Volt)
2. Pressure transmitter ( Pressure to Current)
3. Level transmitter ( Level to Current)
4. RTD ( Temperature to Resistance)
5. Thermocouple ( Temperature to Volt)
6. Tachometer ( Speed to Volt)
7. Photo electric sensor ( light to Volt)
8. Infrared Thermal sensor
How You Can measure

• Convert non visible changes to visible changes

Like

1. C type Borden tube

2. Manometer
3. Color stickers
4. Thermometer
5. Speedometer
6. Diaphragm
7. Counter ( watch)
Control System
Elements of Control system
• Sensor ( measurement element)
• Indicating Controller ( control element)
• Final control Element (correction element)
Discussion
• What is an instrumentation and why we need
it?
• Discussion on various types of sensors used in
factory.
• List sensors, indicators, controllers, final
control elements.
